Storm Fred makes landfall in Florida as Haiti welcomes Grace after devastating earthquake

Another storm is building off the Atlantic coast as the hurricane season moves toward its most dangerous time of the year.

Tropical Storm Fred dumps heavy rains in Florida on Monday and generates dangerous storm surges off the Panhandle coast, at the same time that Tropical Depression Grace and the newly formed Tropical Depression 8 have put the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Bermuda on alert again.

Fred has made landfall shortly before 4 p.m. (East Coast local time) near the town of Port St. Joe, on Cape San Blas in the Florida Panhandle, with sustained winds of up to 65 miles per hour. .

The Keys and South Florida could see three to five inches of rain, while the Big Bend and Panhandle four to eight inches, with isolated spots where more than a cubic foot of rain could fall.

Three to six inches of rain is expected in some parts of Alabama, Georgia and the western Carolinas.

Grace has downgraded to a tropical depression as its sustained winds drop to 35 miles per hour, below the tropical storm threshold of 39 miles per hour.

Grace is about 160 miles southeast of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, and is moving west at 15 miles per hour, according to a Monday advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

The entire coastline of the Dominican Republic and Haiti is under a storm surge warning.

Rainfall can reach between five and 10 inches through Tuesday, and in some isolated parts a maximum of 15 inches.

Further north, Tropical Depression 8 is forecast to become Tropical Storm Henri on Monday.

The system formed about 135 miles northeast of Bermuda, prompting a storm watch to be issued for the island.

This tropical depression is moving southwest at five miles per hour, with maximum winds of 35 miles per hour and is forecast to circle Bermuda in the next 48 hours.

Also, tropical storm conditions are anticipated across the island on Tuesday.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for the Panhandle region, while Alabama Governor Kay Ivey explained in a statement Saturday that she was monitoring the weather and "ready to act from the state level if it is necessary, "NBC reported.

Fred previously passed through Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba, where he was diluted before re-integrating and gaining strength.

The National Hurricane Center previously said Grace was causing heavy rain in Puerto Rico and warned of flash flooding in the coming days in parts of the Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic.

Following Saturday's earthquake, which killed at least 1,200 people, Haiti is bracing for Grace's impact, which is expected to bring heavy rains and winds on Monday.
