The Pentagon announced today that it has decided to send an additional battalion to Kabul airport, after the Taliban movement took control of the Afghan capital.
Reuters quoted Pentagon spokesman John Kirby as saying that US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had authorized sending another battalion to Kabul, bringing the number of forces responsible for securing the evacuation there to about 6 thousand soldiers.
Kirby explained that hundreds of people have left Kabul so far and that the speed of the evacuation will depend on the security situation.
US President Joe Biden decided yesterday to send an additional 1,000 troops to Kabul to secure the evacuation of thousands of American and Afghan civilians.
