When the vaccination campaign interferes with dating apps

2021-08-16T17:47:37.877Z

Several platforms offer users to display their vaccination status on their profile. One way to encourage young people to be vaccinated.

The vaccination campaign invites itself into dating applications.

Badoo, Tinder, Bumble or Meetic users can indicate on their profile that they are vaccinated against Covid-19.

Depending on the platform, the functionalities are different, but the goal remains the same: to encourage young French people to be vaccinated.

A position largely assumed by Tinder, which describes itself as a “

pro vaccination

” company.

We realized that more and more people were talking about their immunization status on their profile.

They wanted a feature to highlight it, which we created,

”says Benjamin Puygrenier, spokesperson for Tinder France.

In user biographies, the use of the term “

vaccine

” has increased by 149% since December 2020. Tinder has set up four badges, to choose from: “

vaccinated

”, “

soon vaccinated

”, “

immunity together

” and the “

vaccine saves

”.

The vaccine, a real attraction

Users are not required to display any of the stickers. But for Nathan, a communications student in Montreal, it is a mark of respect for the individuals he approaches. “

I put it on to reassure the users that I would potentially meet for appointments

,” he explains. The 22-year-old adds that he wants "to

meet only people who have been vaccinated

".

While Nathan is pragmatic, Paul, another Tinder user, is only looking to attract girls.

My boyfriend told me he got more games when he put on one of the badges, so I did the same.

But personally I do not intend to be vaccinated

”.

This is only the good faith of the users, no verification of the health pass is required.

It's as if we say that we are 1.90 meters that we are athletic and that we do not look like this profile.

Confidence is shattered from the first meeting

, ”regrets Benjamin Puygrenier.

On the Meetic side, the usage is somewhat different.

Users can either report their immunization status or wish to keep this information to themselves.

For vaccinated people, a syringe is displayed on their profile.

To date,

40% of users have declared their status and an overwhelming majority are vaccinated,

says

Héloïse des Monstiers, France director of Meetic.

On DisonsDemain, a site dedicated to seniors, 43% of people over 50 have declared their vaccination status.

A partnership with the government

Tinder, Meetic and DisonsDemain, which belong to Match Group, have also entered into a partnership with the French government.

Since July 15, each application has broadcast advertising spots about vaccination, without financial compensation.

On Tinder, a digital vaccination center has been created, with a link to government resources.

This is the first time that Match Group has joined forces with the French State for such an operation.

This campaign will last until the end of August, but badges will continue to be displayed on the platforms.

Here is an example of government advertisement, which allows, by clicking on it, to make an appointment to be vaccinated.

These initiatives have also been taken to the United States, where the government has partnered with nine dating apps. Unlike the French, Americans declaring their vaccination status were able to benefit from free features, such as a free “

Super Like

” on Tinder. This tool allows you to move up the list of people with whom the user wishes to come into contact. For the United Kingdom, which has been offering the same operation since June 7, it is an “

incredible additional asset to our vaccination campaign

,” said Secretary of State Nadhim Zahawi.
