These price increases for consumers are closely monitored by the government. Prices at the pump have been rising steadily for months, in the wake of oil prices supported by the recovery in global demand. Prices at the pump have been rising steadily for months, in the wake of oil prices supported by the recovery in global demand.

The liter of diesel was worth 1.43 euros on average last week and that of super unleaded 1.58 euros, according to official figures from the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

This represents an increase of 12% and almost 16% respectively since the start of the year.

"Fuel prices rose sharply in June and July, driven by the price of a barrel of Brent, which rose to 73 then to 74 dollars per barrel respectively, on average, over these two months"

, underlines Alberto Balboni , economist at Xerfi.

Despite everything, diesel is a little cheaper today than when the “yellow vests” movement started in mid-November 2018 (1.46 euros at the time). But the SP 95 is currently much more expensive than then (1.45 euros the week of November 16, 2018). This lead-free boom is driven by seasonal technical factors.

"There is always an increase in the price of unleaded in the summer because it is the vacation period in the United States, which are extremely demanding"

, explains Francis Pousse, of the National Automotive Professions Council. (CNPA).

"We see the price of Brent stabilize around the current level by the end of the year

," says Alberto Balboni.

After the surge in June-July, fuel prices should therefore stabilize, or even decline very slightly, by the end of this year. ”

In the meantime, these price increases for consumers, which are in addition to those in electricity and gas, are being closely watched by the authorities.

"The government will remain very vigilant, in the coming weeks, to the evolution of consumer prices in relation to the evolution of oil prices",

indicates the entourage of the Minister of Ecological Transition, Barbara Pompili.
