Ma Jiajian signed a confession document on March 7, 2017, and pleaded guilty to all charges in court on August 28, while Hong Zhiqian was withdrawn.

In April 2019, Ma Jiajian was convicted of attempted drug trafficking by a jury and sentenced to 23 years in prison.
