Chemical accidents, floods and rampage: long-time head of operations at the THW and the Memmingen fire brigade draw conclusions

“It was a very nice time, even if some events moved us very much,” summed up Wolfgang Zettler, who has been involved with THW since he was 16 years old. “It was a pleasure to be able to help people,” he emphasized. Wolfgang Zettler and Dr. Günther Bachfischer can look back on many exercises and numerous incidents of damage in the past 21 years: For example, the flood in June 2002, when the first disaster was declared in Memmingen. During the major fire in a company on Alpenstrasse in 2003, Dr. Bachfischer joined the fire brigade operations manager, there was a flood in August in 2005 and a snow chaos in March 2006 when numerous roofs had to be cleared of masses of snow. A strong storm on the children's festival evening in July 2010 caused numerous flooded cellars and underpasses,the management team helped to coordinate over 100 missions. In 2012 there was a chemical accident in the seven-roof house and there was a rampage at a school. In 2013 the former “Podium” burned down on Schrannenplatz, and in March 2015 the storm “Niklas” swept over Memmingen. In autumn 2016, a dangerous concentration of carbon monoxide in an inner city hotel kept the rescue workers busy. Over 100 people were evacuated, and the cause was finally discovered in the building's boiler room and eliminated. In April 2019 there was a major operation at a building in danger of collapsing in Zangmeisterstraße and since March 2020 the corona crisis has also been occupying the local operations managers. They were continuously informed about the current situation, but not directly deployed to ensure their readiness for action in the event of acute damage.Major missions also had to be coordinated at major events, such as the “dream game” of FC Bayern Munich against the team from FC Memmingen and the “Red Baroons” fan club in July 2014 or the BR bike tour in August 2017.

With city fire chief Raphael Niggl and Stephan Zettler, building consultants of the THW, experienced men took over the positions of local operations managers at the beginning of the year. Lord Mayor Schilder thanked them for their willingness to take on this responsible task and wished everyone a healthy return home. In the event of major disasters or disasters, local operations managers, together with the management staff of the City of Memmingen, ensure that all aid organizations and the police are coordinated and deployed in order to ensure orderly and fast help for the citizens of the city.
