One of the most popular theaters in Munich is moving: a huge undertaking.

Christian Stückl, head of the Volkstheater, remains relaxed.

Munich - packing boxes, lugging cardboard boxes, enduring chaos and not losing sight of the big picture.

Anyone who has ever relocated knows how exhausting it is to move.

How big does the effort have to be when an entire theater moves?

Christian Stückl, head of the Volkstheater *, is currently waging just such a move - and still seems very relaxed.

Theater about the theater relocation?

Just not - even if the undertaking is huge, it means: keep track of things!

“It's okay,” says Carsten Lück.

Volkstheater Munich: Opening in October - This is how the move to Tumblingerstraße works

For six years now, all the threads have been coming together with the technology manager of the Volkstheater when it comes to new buildings.

With him - as with Stückl - the joy of what has been achieved and, above all, the anticipation of the new domicile is noticeably great.

The opening is scheduled for October 15 on Tumblingerstrasse in the heart of Munich *.

At the old location on Brienner Strasse, moving boxes are still being packed.

Lastly, the prop tidies up its myriad of utensils and costumes.

It is extremely important to label the boxes in detail.

So that everything comes to the right place in the new theater.

Volkstheater Munich: New stage, new technology - boss Christian Stückl is enthusiastic

“We can finally put everything in one place,” says Stückl with relief as he stands next to the cardboard boxes with the cloakroom from the successful Brandner Kaspar. Sure, nobody wants to miss the 38 years on Brienner Strasse. Even if everything was a bit more complicated there. “We had rehearsal stages at Nordbad and in Zenettistraße. Our stage sets were distributed in containers throughout the city. We had to take huge delivery routes for each performance, ”explains the 59-year-old from Oberammergau.

In the new building with the red brick facade, which blends in well with the Schlachthof district, Germany's most modern theater has been built over the past three years.

The centerpiece: the main stage with the almost 30 meter high tower that extends from the basement over nine floors.

“At the moment we're still working on the stage technology,” says Stückl.

And the glow in his eyes gives an idea of how much the construction is a dream for every director.

Next to and behind the main stage there is a side room, covered by iron curtains.

"There we prepare further stage sets, which are then brought to the main podium at the right moment," explains Stückl enthusiastically.

According to technology boss Lück, work on the stage will take about two more weeks.

Then the team has to get used to the new possibilities and practice the processes.

Until the opening on October 15, instead of the posters for the current productions, portraits will be hanging on the house wall.

“These are our permanent ensemble members.

Actually there are 22, but there is no one to be seen, he came too late, ”says Stückl with a laugh.

The first program for the brand new theater will be presented on September 9th, and the box office will be open again by the end of August.

Volkstheater parade in Munich: Final spurt on the construction site - "We got help"

Until things can start, the motto is: the final spurt on the construction site.

In view of the work of the past three years, Lück takes a deep breath.

“That was enormous.” The numbers speak for themselves: 2900 truckloads of concrete flowed into the new house and 5000 meters of high-voltage cables were laid.

There are 600 doors!

Compared to the previous building, the usable area has almost doubled to 11,200 square meters, and the new theater has a total of almost 26,000 square meters.

How do you organize such a huge area?

“We got help,” reveals Lück.

The moving professionals are making progress, piece by piece, into the new happiness of the venue.
