One of the most memorable images from the great fire that raged in the Jerusalem mountains was of police rescuing a dog from the fire.
Although the picture moved many, it later turned out that the bitch Alice returned to her home after she was released back in the locality and found her tragic death among the flames.
The picture did us all good on the heart - a point of light amidst all the darkness of the fires.
Suddenly the cops and firefighters not only put out fires, they are even willing to risk their lives for the helpless, the animals.
But is there really any caring here?
Or is it a cynical exploitation of an animal that escaped the inferno to publicize the police and its forces?
The tragedy of the bitch Alice: "The police were busy telling a heroic story about saving lives, instead of saving lives"
Immediately after the pats on the back, this "display of purpose" reached the prime minister's desk.
Police crews boasted about the incident and seemed to be right.
But the next day a completely different story emerged from what was published - Alice, the bitch from the famous picture, was found burnt to death near the place from which a shirt had previously been made.
How did this happen?
Apparently it was more important for the Israel Police to publish the story of saving lives than to actually save lives.
A variety of police officials hurried to distribute the photos from the event, there was a photographer who documented the moments of truth, he made sure to pass the photos to the spokesperson and from there it was distributed to all media in a formidable PR campaign, so all Israelis will know and hear about the high act. Really thought of Alice the bitch.
Immediately after the rescue, Alice was released in the locality.
Being a bitch who knows one house, she hurried back to it.
A dog that was traumatized, anxious about the fate of its owner that she is used to keeping - it was clear that she would return to the scene of the incident, even if it was all on fire.
Not just dogs are called "man's best friends".
The police spokeswoman said the bitch was "in a safe place", but in practice - everyone was busy in public relations.
