Students from Leshantang Yangge Xiaolin Middle School participated in a summer study tour organized by the Civil Engineering and Development Department this year.

The purpose of this activity is to visit Hong Kong's ongoing development projects and infrastructure, understand the scope of work of the Civil Engineering and Development Department, and let students understand the importance of Hong Kong as a livable city.

Many people think that Hong Kong's densely packed buildings and gloomy colors are like a "concrete forest", which suffocates the people of this land.

However, as society gradually emphasizes the construction of "livable cities", the government will also add elements of humanities and environmental conservation to newly completed development projects, and strive to create a safe, green and sustainable environment.

The first activity was to visit the Tseung Kwan O Fill Depot. Everyone is usually familiar with the Tseung Kwan O Landfill. However, in order to promote environmental protection and encourage the separation of reusable building materials, the Tseung Kwan O Fill Depot collects Liao inert waste materials and uses advanced artificial intelligence. Comprehensive monitoring and operation have opened students' horizons.

Another itinerary of the event is to visit the Cross Bay Link in Tseung Kwan O.

In view of the completion of many housing estates in Tseung Kwan O, it is expected that the traffic in the Tseung Kwan O city centre and Wan Po Road will not be able to bear the rapid population growth. Therefore, it is necessary to construct a bridge directly connecting Tiu Keng Leng and Tseung Kwan O city centre on the bay adjacent to Lohas Park Station. , So as to ease the traffic situation in Tseung Kwan O.

The staff of the Civil Engineering and Development Department led the school teachers and all students to observe the construction process and characteristics of the bridge by ferry. Looking up from below on both sides of the bridge, one can appreciate the exterior design of the double-arch steel bridge up close, presenting the mathematics representing "infinity" The symbol echoes with the vibrant town of Tseung Kwan O, confirming the vigorous development of community construction in Hong Kong.

After that, another highlight was to visit the Longyuan Natural Ecological Park.

Some people may ask, Longyuan is a wetland in Hong Kong. What does it have to do with the Civil Engineering and Development Department?

It turned out that when the government developed the Kwu Tung North/Fanling North New Development Area, it also attached importance to the ecological value of the New Territories North.

Longyuan contains a variety of rare creatures, such as Luwen’s tree frog, colorful sandpiper, black-faced spoonbill, etc., and the highland is the most complete freshwater wetland in Hong Kong, planted with watercress fields and vegetable fields.

The Land Development Department will restore part of the dry land and abandoned farmland into wetland habitats, improve the irrigation water channels of the highland, and add about 8 hectares of wetland to the entire highland.

This itinerary allows students to understand how to balance economic development and environmental conservation in the process of infrastructure construction. Even if the government wants to build infrastructure nearby, it can also take into account the value of biodiversity.

The economy, society and environment are all important indicators of a livable city. Our students are convinced that the future of Hong Kong will be vibrant.
