According to the Berlin virologist Christian Drosten, unvaccinated adults face a difficult autumn and winter.

"Everyone, especially everyone over the age of 45, is urgently advised to take a very serious look at whether they really do not want to be vaccinated," said the Charité researcher.

Some people's plan to be indirectly protected by supposed herd immunity with a vaccination rate of around two thirds of the population no longer works because of the highly contagious Delta variant *.

"If you don't get vaccinated, you will get infected, and maybe this winter." It should be noted that the risk of infection for unvaccinated people will also increase this autumn and winter because, due to the high vaccination rate, more new infections are allowed every day than in the previous winter.

In addition, vaccinated people could very likely pass the virus on some time after vaccination without becoming ill themselves.

Drosten: "It's about protecting yourself"

No one could hope to be spared by the pandemic running out of its own accord, explained Drosten. Because of the delta variant, vaccination is not a primary question of community protection. It is now more about protecting yourself. Drosten was convinced that many hesitant people will soon be vaccinated after all, also because they experienced what Covid-19 could mean for unvaccinated people in their immediate surroundings.
