Huge squalls have left a trail of devastation in East Frisia.

Weather expert Kachelmann speaks of a tornado.

Confirmation by the DWD now follows.

Update from August 17, 2 p.m.:

It caused severe damage in the community of Großheide in East Frisia: Now it is clear that the storm on Monday evening was actually a tornado.

This was confirmed by the tornado expert from the German Weather Service (DWD), Andreas Friedrich, on Tuesday.

"On the basis of eyewitnesses and video material, one can clearly say that it was a tornado last night," said Friedrich.

The storm is classified as a moderate tornado of class F2 with estimated rotational speeds between 180 and 250 kilometers per hour.

The diameter is estimated to be several dozen to 100 meters.

Moderately severe tornadoes of magnitude F2, as now found in Großheide, are comparatively rare in Germany, explained Friedrich.

Squalls leave a trail of devastation

Original report from August 17, 2021:

Aurich - “Tornado yesterday evening”, tweeted meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann (63).

This time nobody has to “confirm the tornado”, writes the weather expert in another tweet.

The tornado * could be seen "dozens of times in pictures and on the radar".

Kachelmann is convinced: There was a strong tornado in East Frisia on Monday evening (August 16).

Kachelmann already shared radar images on Twitter hours ago: “The #tornado in the # Doppler radar image is where the green and red colors meet - see legend: Very close together, high wind speeds away from the radar location near Emden and directly next to it = Rotation!"

Numerous videos and photos can be found in the social networks under the hashtag Ostfriesland or Tornado.

A mighty cloud can be seen in the recordings.

Other photos show the violence of nature: an overturned caravan lies on the street as if it were sleeping and destroyed houses.

Five houses are no longer habitable for the time being.

No one was injured, as the police and fire brigade announced.
