In the wage conflict at the railways, the fronts between the state company and the train drivers' union GDL have hardened.

Passengers are now threatened with the next strike.

Munich - Deutsche Bahn customers have to be prepared for another strike, possibly this weekend.

The head of the train drivers' union, Claus Weselsky, made this clear in front of members on Tuesday.

"You know that we have to use this last resort again if the management, supported by the owner, continues to behave like this," said the chairman of the German Locomotive Drivers' Union (GDL) at a rally in front of the Deutsche Bahn headquarters in Berlin.

It was only on Monday that the head of the German Association of Civil Servants, Ulrich Silberbach, declared with a view to the wage conflict at the railway that there would probably have to be further strike actions.

Deutsche Bahn: Train drivers leave the specific date open for further strikes

This could mean that work stoppages could take place again in the coming days.

When the GDL could actually strike again, Weselsky initially left it open.

A new strike is likely to hit millions of passengers, including many vacationers.

There are still school holidays in ten federal states.

The GDL had paralyzed large parts of the passenger traffic for two days * just last week, in the freight traffic the rail strike lasted a few hours longer.

She fights for better pay and better working conditions for the employees, at the same time she wants to expand her influence in the rail company.

Deutsche Bahn: Possible strikes - GDL boss announces earlier warning time

The most recent wave of strikes had taken many passengers largely unprepared given an advance warning time of just 15 hours.

This had angered many passengers.

"We will - unlike last time - deliver the information in good time," Weselsky assured on Tuesday.

But he did not want to name a period of time.

The GDL is calling for wage increases of around 3.2 percent as in the public service and a corona bonus of 600 euros in the current year.

Unlike the larger railway and transport union (EVG), it does not want to accept a zero round in salaries this year.

Due to billions in losses in the pandemic, Deutsche Bahn wants to distribute the increase in stages at later times, with a contract term of 40 months. In addition, there would be benefits for old-age provision and the exclusion of redundancies for operational reasons.
