Living in your own home on 50 square meters - it can be cozy, but it also has its strange moments.

In Glonn, a couple lives in the municipality's first “tiny house” - and often receives unexpected visitors.

Glonn

- The mistake is probably the "Griaß Di". Almost too inviting is this lettering emblazoned on the frosted glass of the entrance door by Vera Brandstetter and Peter Gröbmayr in Glonn. The couple's house attracts onlookers anyway, who sometimes suddenly appear on the terrace. The two of them brought it on themselves a bit: They live in a prominent location opposite the Edeka market, in the first “Tiny House” in Glonn. Brand: self-made.

The 50 square meters of living space on which the couple has made themselves comfortable are paneled with light larch wood elements.

She is a media designer, 27, he is a carpenter and construction technician, 25 years old.

The two stroll barefoot through their realm on the polished wooden floor.

In the combined kitchen-cum-living room, there is a smell of the stone pine from which the wall to the bedroom is made.

Wood, wood, wood.

When a carpenter builds a house, he does not spax plasterboard on the ceiling.

Tiny House in Glonn: The folding chairs are hanging on the wall

Peter Gröbmayr opens a drawer on the kitchen island that is only slightly larger than the ceramic hob.

“It's tiny,” he comments, saying that he has to step to the side to get to the cutlery.

Tiny means tiny in German and describes a building style that can use as little space as possible.

For a long time, Gröbmayr worked on the floor plan together with his father, the senior boss of the carpentry of the same name.

Thanks to the idea of the kitchen island, there was space for a corner bench with a dining table, made of wood, of course.

Two folding chairs hang on hooks from the wall next to it - so that more people can sit together.

Such small compromises are needed to accommodate the following on 50 square meters: bathroom, kitchen, living room, bedroom, an office that could just about serve as a small children's room, and a pantry half the size with washing machine and freezer.

There is hardly a niche from which a drawer cannot be pulled out.

The problem without an attic and basement is less the living space than the storage space.

“We cleaned out a lot before moving in,” says Vera Brandstetter.

Tiny House in Glonn: moving with two low loaders

Since spring, she and Gröbmayr have lived between the 34 centimeter thick, wood wool insulated walls that they have placed on a ten-year property at the “Bäckerhügel” in Glonn. In other words, they put the whole house in place: Son and father Gröbmayr preassembled it in their own carpentry in two modules, each three meters wide. The move to the later location was completed with two low-loader trips, available there: foundation, water, electricity and sewer connections. All water pipes run on the kitchen-bathroom side, so that when assembling the two halves only a power plug was required as a connection. The premise for the construction: That it can be lifted away quickly.

"We test it ourselves," says Gröbmayr about the prototype in which he has been living with his girlfriend for several months.

In the beginning, the guesswork was great in Glonn - people kept getting lost on the property, mistaking the tiny house for a snack stand or a café.

The two of them have already got used to the fact that sometimes someone unexpectedly peeps in through the window looking for a kebab or a piece of cake.

But the plan is different: Gröbmayr still wants to eliminate a few teething problems - and then go into series production with the house. Some have already knocked, including older people who find their own house too big, for example. Gröbmayr envisions that they could let the youngsters move in there and set up the modular building as a retirement home for themselves on the property. Or it would be something for young couples who could temporarily lease a piece of free building land on which a “real” house would not be built until years later. “For the time before and after family life with children,” summarizes the 25-year-old. Or as a rental property.

He speculates that his tiny house will probably cost 100,000 to 150,000 euros in serial sales, depending on the version.

Not for the poor, but unlike other mini-buildings, such a house should easily survive half a century, even with sporadic changes of location.

"We'll be through with the house tour in a minute," says Vera Brandstetter with a laugh and steps out onto the attached terrace.

Beyond the planks with a beer table, grill and hanging chair, there is a garden that is anything but tiny.

The two are probably the only tiny house residents with a lawnmower bulldog.

Tiny House in Glonn: photovoltaics on the roof

The flat roof is covered with photovoltaic panels.

“We generate more energy than we can use,” says construction engineer Gröbmayr.

Electric underfloor heating and battery storage are installed in the house.

That and the thick insulation let the resident couple look calmly on the upcoming winter months.

In a pinch, or for comfort reasons - you can use the Buller stove in the living room to heat up firewood.

“I wouldn't want to swap at the moment,” says Vera Brandstetter about living for two in a tiny house.

The tightness has another advantage: it can be sucked through in five minutes.
