The gradual easing of the corona restrictions brought a jump in sales to the catering trade in June.
But it is still too early to give the all-clear.
Wiesbaden -Despite the corona pandemic * and staff shortages, sales in the hospitality industry increased significantly in June.
The reason for this is the gradual relaxation of the corona restrictions.
Restaurants and hotels were allowed to reopen, while the quota of those vaccinated or recovered, who can again participate in public life largely without restrictions, is increasing.
As the Federal Statistical Office announced on Wednesday (August 18), sales increased by 61.7 percent compared to the previous month, calendar and seasonally adjusted.
However, it was still 40.7 percent below the pre-crisis level of February 2020 and was also slightly lower in real terms than in June 2020 (minus 0.8 percent).
Hospitality industry: sales still below pre-crisis level
Hotels and other accommodation companies were able to more than double their sales.
As the Federal Office further explains, these companies were particularly affected by the severe restrictions imposed by the federal emergency brake.
In the meantime, the industry is showing good figures again and made a jump in sales of around 114 percent compared to May.
The gastronomy, on the other hand, is recovering less strongly.
Here sales rose by 44.7 percent.
Overall, caution is still advisable for the hospitality industry.
Despite rising sales compared to the previous months, the sales are still well below the pre-crisis level.
Sales in the hotel industry are still just under half, and in the catering trade around 36 percent below the level of February 2020.
In the first half of the year, too, the industry lagged significantly behind: From January to June 2021 inclusive, sales were 38.0 percent below the level of the first six months of 2020 in real terms, the nominal decrease is 35.6 percent.
This is mainly due to the fact that at the beginning of 2020, before the outbreak of the corona pandemic, hotels and restaurants were still open without restriction for almost three months.
