Covid-19: France places Morocco and Algeria on its red list

2021-08-19T14:31:53.469Z

The two countries are hit by new restrictions by the French authorities. Their color changes from orange to red on the government map. Does this change anything for travelers?

From orange they turn red.

Morocco and Algeria were considered as "countries in which an active circulation of the virus is observed in controlled proportions, without the dissemination of worrying variants".

They are now placed in the third category of the French government classification, colored red.

It groups together, according to the French authorities, “countries in which active circulation of the virus is observed with the presence of worrying variants”.

This is accompanied by the entry into force of new measures for travelers to and from these two countries.

However, vaccinated travelers can still get there without too much hassle.

No change for the vaccinated

To go to Morocco, they are subject to the same conditions as when the kingdom was classified orange: vaccination certificate, negative PCR test dating less than 48 hours before boarding and health card.

For the return to France, they will only be asked for the vaccination certificate.

The unvaccinated, on the other hand, will no longer be able to reach Morocco for tourism.

They will indeed have to prove a compelling reason to be able to travel there.

French people already there are authorized to enter France on condition that they present a negative PCR test less than 48 hours before their flight, carry out an antigen test on their arrival at the airport, and submit to a quarantine of ten days controlled by security forces.

The same restrictions apply to unvaccinated people wishing to travel to or return from Algeria.

Vaccinated travelers must respect the travel conditions imposed by the Algerian authorities, either present a negative PCR test of less than 36 hours and perform an antigen test on arrival on Algerian soil.

For the return to France, there too, the vaccination certificate is sufficient.

In both countries, tourism is hampered anyway by a series of health restrictions.

Starting with the curfew, in effect from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. in Morocco and from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. in certain regions of Algeria.

According to John Hopkins University, a third of the population is fully vaccinated in Morocco while in Algeria, vaccination coverage does not reach 2% of the population.
