Pentagon creates joint task force to help Haiti earthquake

The Pentagon announced the creation of a joint task force to assist the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in post-earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

Starting this Wednesday, the group will begin its work in the country.

"That's where we're at now, getting a clear picture of what the situation is like on the ground," said Pentagon press secretary John Kirby.

"The field assessment team will continue to survey the area, and report back to Southern Command so that we can better coordinate and integrate USAID and other agency assistance to the people of Haiti."

The Department of Defense will provide eight helicopters for aerial surveillance;

the USS Arlington with two helicopters and a surgical team;

the US naval ship Burlington will assist in reconnaissance and assessment;

and two P-8 Poseidon aircraft for reconnaissance.

There are also two coastguards stationed in Haiti and seven others on the way, as well as a Coast Guard aircraft to assist in reconnaissance.

"We expect the four US Southern Command field hospitals to be installed in southern Haiti by the end of this week," Kirby said.

Costa Rica sends 9 tons of humanitarian aid to Haiti

Puerto Rico joins efforts to help Haiti

The Secretary of the Department of State of Puerto Rico, Omar J. Marrero, reported that the government will support the Puerto Rican Solidarity Alliance and the Haiti Stand Up Foundation to assist in the efforts to collect aid for that country after being affected by the earthquake of magnitude 7.2 Saturday, which left at least 1,941 people dead.

Marrero announced that a collection center has been established at the Navy Frontier dock in San Juan.

In addition, citizens have been asked to bring dry and canned food, which will not expire in the coming weeks.

Other items that will be received will be masks, antibacterial wipes, hand sanitizers, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, bandages, gauze and other first aid items. 

Puerto Rico National Guard mobilizes to Haiti on federal humanitarian mission

Personnel and helicopters of the National Guard of Puerto Rico (GNPR) mobilized this Tuesday as part of the humanitarian efforts of the United States for Haiti, after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that devastated the southern part of the country causing, in addition to the 1,941 deaths and 9,900 injured, the collapse of countless structures.

The aviation personnel of the National Guard departed from their base at the Ribas Dominicci Airport, in Isla Grande.

"The United States Department of Defense activated the GNPR aviation unit to assist in the rescue and medical transportation of those affected by the earthquake," said the adjutant general of Puerto Rico, Major General José J. Reyes.  

The National Guard reported that 20 personnel in three helicopters will travel to the San Isidro Base in the Dominican Republic, from where they will carry out search and rescue operations, medical transport and aerial reconnaissance and evaluation of the damage caused by the earthquake.

The mobilization of the GNPR aviation unit occurs in the middle of the hurricane season in the Caribbean.

Tropical depression Grace will hit Haiti this Monday

La depresión tropical Grace se acerca a la costa sur de la República Dominicana esta mañana y lleva consigo la amenaza de inundaciones repentinas y deslizamientos de tierra en la isla de La Española.

Países latinoamericanos envían ayuda humanitaria a Haití

El gobierno de México envió este domingo insumos médicos, alimentos y agua hacia Haití, como parte de un cargamento de ayuda humanitaria tras el terremoto registrado este sábado, según informó la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) en Twitter.

El cargamento fue llevado a bordo de un avión de la Fuerza Aérea Mexicana.

CHILE

El gobierno de Chile envió este domingo más de 16 toneladas de ayuda humanitaria a Haití, informó el presidente Sebastián Piñera.

En un video publicado en redes sociales, Piñera detalló que la ayuda consiste en medicamentos, insumos sanitarios, alimentos, agua, entre otros.

Piñera también dijo que coordinó con los presidentes de Costa Rica y Panamá para que Chile se encargue de trasladar a Haití la ayuda humanitaria que enviarán las naciones centroamericanas.

ARGENTINA

El gobierno argentino enviará una misión de ayuda humanitaria a Haití, informó mediante un comunicado publicado este domingo por el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores.

En el comunicado se explicó que "se realizan gestiones para coordinar el traslado de personal de la Comisión de Cascos Blancos al lugar con el objetivo de brindar asistencia sanitaria y proveer de voluntarios para el manejo de albergues, al tiempo que mantienen permanente comunicación con la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), a fin de conocer las necesidades sanitarias en la emergencia".

La Embajada de Venezuela en Haití informó este domingo en la noche que llegó a la isla un vuelo con 30 toneladas de ayuda humanitaria con insumos en "apoyo y solidaridad" al país que fue golpeado por un terremoto este sábado.

El sismo destruyó 13.694 viviendas y dañó otras 13.785, dijeron funcionarios de la agencia. La destrucción también ha llevado a los hospitales al borde y ha bloqueado las carreteras que transportarían suministros vitales.

"Cuando se trata de necesidades médicas, esta es nuestra mayor urgencia. Hemos comenzado a enviar medicamentos y personal médico a las instalaciones afectadas", dijo el primer ministro Ariel Henry. "Para las personas que necesitan atención especial urgente, hemos evacuado a un cierto número de ellos y evacuaremos a algunos más hoy y mañana".

El estado de emergencia está en vigor para el Departamento Oeste, Departamento Sur, Nippes y Grand'Anse.
