Quick action was required here.

Hans Feist, responsible district manager for the forest in the city of Tegernsee am Tuftenberg, made a dangerous discovery during a patrol.

In the protective forest, some trees were infested with the bark beetle - and the next generation of the pest apparently shortly before the excursion.

The affected wood had to be removed quickly.

Tegernsee - The city of Tegernsee, the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forests Holzkirchen (AELF) and the Holzkirchen Association of Forest Owners (WBV) acted quickly. They organized the transport of the beetle wood into the valley with the help of a helicopter, because the steep terrain is neither accessible for cable cars nor trucks. "It would be extremely dangerous to leave a source of infestation to its own devices, especially in the protective forest," explains Christian Webert, Head of Forests at AELF Holzkirchen. The rapid removal of the infected trees by helicopter is the only effective measure, despite the higher costs and temporary noise. "The city of Tegernsee has done its duty to control bark beetles in an exemplary manner", praises Webert.

The helicopter from a specialist company was in action for four hours.

It brought around 90 cubic meters of damaged wood into the valley.

The trunks were delimbed at the landing site, cut to length and taken to the sawmill the next day.

The summit material was chopped up.

The action was associated with effort, costs and disruption, sum up Christian Webert and forester Frederik Hiemenz, who coordinated the operation on site.

But: "If we can take the handle of the bark beetle so quickly and effectively, the benefits for the forest, the city of Tegernsee and the forest visitors outweigh the rest."

Rapid processing and removal of freshly infested wood from the forest are fundamentally necessary in order to prevent further trees from being infested by the beetle.

Insecticide-free measures to combat the bark beetle are also financially supported by the Free State of Bavaria.

The temporary closure of the hiking trails during the flight time, which was necessary for safety reasons, was taken over by the Tegernsee building yard.
