Plácido Domingo returned to the Spanish stages this Wednesday at the Starlite Festival in Marbella. The 80-year-old tenor was received with a sober applause accompanied by several “bravos” by the audience, which did not sell out. This is the second recent presence on the stage in Spain after the accusations of sexual harassment in the United States and its passage in June at the National Auditorium in Madrid. Accompanied by the Malaga Symphony Orchestra - under the direction of maestro Eugene Kohn - he shared tables with the soprano Saioa Hernández, with whom he took turns and who replaced Ainhoa Arteta, who is recovering from his hospitalization. The surprise of the night was put by Marta Sánchez, with whom Domingo interpreted his version of the Spanish anthem to close the concert, which the audience applauded for three minutes on their feet. Among them, the former president of the Government José María Aznar.

the bunch of roses

with the pasodoble duet between Ascensión –la florista, with the voice of Saioa Hernández- and Joaquín –the mechanic, Domingo's own role-, for which both received a loud applause. He was also taken away by one of the surprises of the night, the singer Marta Sánchez, who allowed the tenor to rest in an intermission with the tango

Nostalgias

and a classic of Spanish music,

Los nardos

, flowers with which the singer herself came out on stage. to accompany a white dress.

Together with Hernández and Sánchez he played the first of the final four encores. The first,

Bésame mucho

while the director of Starlite, Sandra García-Sanjuán, remained on stage (hours before he stated in

La Hora de La 1

that his event “values the musical quality” and that Plácido Domingo, “as the great tenor to world level that is, it had to be on the bill ”). The second,

The day you love me

, in a duet with the Madrid soprano. He continued the solo concert with

The Most Subtle Hair

The final touch was interpreting the anthem of Spain with the lyrics of Marta Sánchez in duet with the singer herself, who chose for that moment a completely red dress.

They were followed by a loud ovation from the audience, who stood up to applaud for three minutes amid shouts of "Long live Spain!"

In the auditorium of the Nagüeles quarry, headquarters of the Starlite Festival, it was almost full, although the capacity was not completed, limited to about 3,000 people due to sanitary restrictions. Yes, all the most expensive tickets were sold, between 399 and 469 euros. Some of the cheapest were available, at 73 euros. Among those who attended the event were the former president of the Government José María Aznar with his wife, the former mayor of Madrid Ana Botella and the daughter of the couple, Ana Aznar. Also other well-known faces such as Carmen Lomana, Count Rudi or Valeria Mazza, regulars of the event.

Plácido Domingo's career came to a halt just two years ago after nine women accused him of sexual harassment, followed by 11 more a month later. A subsequent investigation by the United States Opera Musicians Union (AGMA) confirmed "the accusations against Plácido Domingo" after having found credible testimonies from 27 anonymous people. The tenor first described the cases of sexual harassment as false and said that he had never abused anyone, but later he apologized for "the pain" that he may have caused the complainants and assumed "completely responsibility" for his actions. The situation led to his resignation as director of the Los Angeles Opera and the cancellation of the vast majority of performances he had signed all over the world.

Domingo has not returned to sing in the United States, although he has in Europe. Also in Spain, where he returned after almost two years of absence, after those accusations of sexual harassment and after being hospitalized for covid in Acapulco. It was last June 9 at the National Auditorium, in Madrid. There he started a resounding ovation of more than three minutes and was forced to perform five encores for the happiness of his audience. Among the spectators, that night, was the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso. “It is a pride to have him among us. One of the best tenors and one of the greatest ambassadors that Spain has had. It is a pride to have him in Spain ”, Ayuso said then. The next tenor appointments are on August 31 in Bulgaria and September 4 in the Czech Republic,to return to Spain on the 25th of that month in Mérida, in a concert that has already started a controversy, since the Extremadura Orchestra, which was originally going to accompany him, announced its withdrawal from the program after rejecting the singer's participation. In autumn, Sunday will pass through Florence (Italy), Vienna (Austria), Monaco and Milan (Italy). It also has closed dates in France, Germany and Austria for 2022.
