Qantas makes the corona vaccination compulsory for its employees.

The Australian airline has set two deadlines for this.

Sydney - All employees of the Australian airline Qantas must be vaccinated against corona.

For pilots, flight attendants and ground staff there is a deadline of November 15, the remaining employees will have until the end of March 2022, as the company announced.

There will be exceptions for people who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.

"One crew member can fly to multiple cities in a single day and come into contact with thousands of people," said Qantas managing director Alan Joyce.

It is therefore "very important" that the employees are vaccinated.

“I think this is the kind of leadership and security that people expect from us.” The guidelines also apply to the subsidiary Jetstar, it said.

Vaccinations are the only way to escape the "cycle of lockdowns and border closings".

At the end of 2020, Australia's national airline announced that it would introduce compulsory vaccinations for passengers on international flights as soon as enough vaccine was available.

Qantas was founded in 1920 and is one of the oldest continuously operating airlines in the world.

Before the corona pandemic, the company carried 50 million passengers around the world every year.

At the beginning of August, the airline announced that it would release 2,500 employees for an initial two months due to ongoing corona lockdowns in parts of Australia and the border closings within Australia.

Job cuts are not planned.

Australia's international borders have been closed since March 2020, with a few exceptions.

With strict rules, the country with its 25 million inhabitants has long been very successful in the fight against the pandemic.

Due to the spread of the delta variant, however, the cases are now increasing.

The metropolis of Sydney and large parts of New South Wales have been in lockdown since the end of June. In total, around 38,000 cases were confirmed, and more than 940 people died. About 27 percent of Australians over the age of 16 are fully vaccinated. dpa
