The city of Dachau has set itself the goal of becoming a Fairtrade Town.

There is already a lot going on to achieve this goal.

Dachau - This award is given to cities that - depending on the number of inhabitants - can show a certain number of retail, gastronomy and social and public institutions with at least two Fairtrade products.

There is already a lot going on to achieve this goal.

The Fairtrade seal is a guarantee for fair trade, that is, production under decent working conditions and with appropriate pay for employees in emerging and developing countries.

So that the city of Dachau can also make its contribution and call itself Fairtrade Town, five criteria must be met.

The first condition, a Council decision to participate in the campaign, was made in autumn 2019.

Steering group

The second criterion provides for the establishment of a steering group. This took place in the spring of this year. The committed group consists of Lina Wehmeyer (Dachau Youth Council), Brigitte Hinterscheid (Fair Weltladen Dachau), Brigitte Scheibe (Fair Weltladen Dachau), Peter Heller (Bund Naturschutz), Barbara Knöpfle (Fair Weltladen Dachau), Sabrina Schwaab (Economic Development City Dachau) , Beate Günzel (Fair Weltladen Dachau), Michaela Steiner (Dachauer Land), Hans Ramsteiner (Bavarian Red Cross) and Susanne Deininger (Dachauer Forum).

The steering group has important tasks, including coordinating local activities, setting priorities and promoting dialogue and the exchange of information between politics, business and the citizens of the municipality.

In addition, the steering group is promoting the fulfillment of the other criteria.

public relation

This includes public relations (criterion number three).

The group is supposed to inform the local press and other media about the engagement of the steering group on the way to the Fairtrade-Town - for example via press releases.

Retail has to keep pace

The fourth criterion is the commitment of local retailers and restaurants.

At least two fair trade products must be in the range.

In order to be able to record the current offer and to encourage support, the city of Dachau recently sent out questionnaires to retailers and restaurants, which are currently being evaluated.

Public facilities

In the case of criterion number five, public institutions such as schools, clubs and church / religious communities are on the move.

This is about the implementation of information and educational activities on fair trade and the use of fair trade products such as the use of fairly produced soccer balls in school sports.

The city of Dachau, for example, only uses fair trade coffee and biscuits for its meetings.

The aim is to create awareness of fair production conditions as well as social and environmentally friendly manufacturing and trading structures.

Fairtrade towns specifically promote fair trade at local level and are the result of successful networking between actors from civil society, politics and business who work together locally to promote fair trade.
