As-Suwayda-Sana
Al-Suwayda Governorate began harvesting the almond crop for the current season within the low-lying areas, to be extended successively to include the rest of the areas planted with this tree during the coming days.
The director of As-Suwayda Agriculture, Ayham Hamed, told SANA reporter that the initial estimates of production amounted to about 2,189 tons, with 1,631 tons for rainfed and the rest for irrigated crops.
He indicated that the total areas planted with almond trees in the governorate amount to 2,639 hectares, comprising 721,000 trees, of which 568,000 are fruitful, pointing out that the current season's production is "relatively less" than the previous one due to the exposure of some almond cultivation areas to frost.
Hamed stated that the directorate encourages the cultivation of almonds in the various regions of the governorate, as they are more tolerant of drought and are compatible with the conditions of the environment there, in addition to achieving economic feasibility for farmers.
As-Suwayda Governorate produced 3,268 tons of almonds last season.
