The international community has seen with anguish the seizure of power in Afghanistan in the hands of the Taliban, given its history of oppression against women and girls, and against anyone who violates its law.

Countries around the world have begun evacuating their citizens in Afghanistan, and those Afghans who worked with their forces abroad.

Among these is Uruguay, which reported the evacuation to Germany of two Uruguayan humanitarian workers who were volunteers of the NGO Shelter Now International.

Likewise, Argentina said on Wednesday that there were no Argentines left in Kabul, after evacuating to Uzbekistan, bound for Germany, a couple of Argentines who worked for an NGO.

However, concern for Afghan women and girls who could be left behind amid the Taliban regime has prompted several Latin American governments to offer humanitarian aid.

"The risk of a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan should be a cause for alert to the entire international community, regardless of our geographical situation," Ecuador's President Guillermo Lasso tweeted on Thursday.

Lasso affirmed that "moments like this" make it necessary to extend the collaboration to "uphold universal values such as solidarity, human rights, especially of women, children and people in vulnerability, as well as fundamental individual freedoms."
