The bodies of at least three people were seen in the suffocating mob outside Kabul airport, according to footage filmed by journalists on Saturday, as thousands desperately try to flee the Taliban regime.

Images from UK news channel Sky News show soldiers covering three bodies with white canvases.

It is not clear how they died.

Sky reporter Stuart Ramsay, who was at the airport, said people in front of the crowd were "crushed" and medics were rushing from one injured to another.

The images also show many injured.

Stuart Ramsay said people were "dehydrated and terrified".

His team filmed soldiers spraying the crowd with a garden hose, saying they used "anything to keep them cool."

Given the chaos around, he said the deaths seemed “inevitable”.

Desperate scenes

The airport has been the scene of desperate scenes since the Taliban took control of Kabul on August 15, with tens of thousands of Afghans waiting in the heat for hours, if not days, to try and catch a flight to 'evacuation. Families hoping for a miraculous escape have piled up between barbed wire in an unofficial no-man's-land separating Taliban fighters from US troops and the remnants of an Afghan special forces brigade coming to their aid.

The roads to the airport are congested with traffic, and reports indicate that the Taliban have arrested, beaten or harassed Afghans who were trying to flee. The United States, which has taken control of the airport, has repeatedly warned people not on evacuation lists. On Saturday, they reiterated the warning, citing “potential security threats” near the airport gates. US President Joe Biden called the airlift "one of the biggest and most difficult" in history.
