The Rotaract Club Oberland went together to donate blood - an act that is urgently needed at the moment. There is a lack of blood in Bavaria's clinics.

Holzkirchen - The need is great because many hospitals are now catching up on operations that have been postponed due to the corona.

At the same time, many donors are on vacation, and the blood supply drops during the vacation months.

"The situation is tense," said the blood donation service of the BRK.

In Bavaria alone, around 2,000 blood units are needed every day, and it is not uncommon for life or death to be the issue.

At the blood donation appointments, however, many couches remain empty.

An average of 15 percent of the possible appointment slots that can be booked online expire.

Interview with Rotaract chairman Simon Matttner: "We're signed up and we're going to do it"

Now or never, thought five young members of the Rotaract Club Oberland, the Rotary youth organization.

They conspired to be blood brothers and sisters and signed up for the donation date on Tuesday, August 24th at the Holzkirchen Middle School (3 to 8 p.m.).

Those who want to follow their example can get a slot at www.blutspendedienst.com/holzkirchen.

The Rotaract group is led by Simon Matttner, who served as club president until June, and his successors Natalie Franz and Hannah Lahorte from Holzkirchen.

Simon Mattner (23) from Wiesse explains how the "blood group" was found.

Mr. Mattner, can you see blood or is it rather dim?

Mattner:

No, I don't mind.

Shouldn't be a problem on Tuesday.

I've already been to the donation twice, but before Corona.

What motivated you to take this action?

Mattner: In

June our Rotaract Club organized a Zoom lecture with BRK state manager Leonhard Stark.

He was clever and took the chance to advertise blood donation.

And since we are a charitable association, we said, well, is a small gesture that can go a long way right now, we are going there together now.

There are six of us, three boys and the three girls.

Pinching is forbidden - or is it allowed to go back if someone gets the flutter?

Mattner:

No, nobody gets weak there.

We are now registered and we will go through with it.

Are there any plans to end the bloodletting together afterwards?

Mattner:

Sure, the liquid reserves have to be replenished.

We want to sit down afterwards.

We haven't seen each other for a long time during the Corona period.

Maybe we will make plans for further activities together.

Do you want to repeat the blood donation drive?

Mattner:

Absolutely, as often as possible.

Preferably again as a blood group.

Interview conducted by Andreas Höger.

Who can donate blood?

Any healthy person from their 18th birthday up to one day before their 73rd birthday can donate blood (first-time donors up to the age of 64). Women can be tapped four times and men six times within twelve months. Usually 500 milliliters of blood are drawn. There must be at least 56 days between two donations. You must bring an official photo ID (identity card or driver's license). Donors with flu or cold symptoms and people who have direct contact with Covid sufferers are not permitted. It is compulsory to wear a mask. Further donation dates in Holzkirchen: September 17, October 19, November 26, December 21.

Blood donations are still needed - even during Corona times.

But is it really safe?

We asked Simon Horst from the BRK in the Miesbach district.
