The US military is formulating new evacuation routes from Kabul airport, following possible ISIS threats on American civilians in Afghanistan, a senior US official said today (Saturday).
This is a new complication for the chaotic evacuation efforts from the country, following its rapid fall into the hands of the Taliban last Sunday.
The source said a small group of U.S. citizens and possibly other civilians would receive specific instructions for their next steps, including reaching a transit point from which they would be picked up by the military.
The source spoke anonymously to discuss military activity.
Earlier, the U.S. embassy in Kabul issued a new security warning, requiring U.S. citizens not to arrive at Kabul airport without detailed instructions from a U.S. administration representative.
Officials declined to give further details about the threat posed by ISIS, but described it as significant.
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
