"The fighter saw the terrorist shoot him": an investigation into the shooting at the border fence
The IDF confirmed that observers on the Gaza Strip border did not notice the armed terrorist approaching the wall and shooting at Border Police fighter Barel Hadaria Shmueli, who was fatally wounded.
Officers in the Southern Command said that due to "a gap in intelligence, they thought the fighter was shot by a sniper," but the testimonies and photographs did not leave room for doubt.

The IDF confirmed today (Sunday) that observers on the Gaza Strip border did not notice the armed terrorist who approached the wall and fired a gun at a border fighter, Sgt. Barel Hadaria Shmueli, 21, from Beer Yaakov, who was fatally wounded. According to the investigation, the terrorist Fired three bullets at him from close range, one of which hit Shmueli in the face. The
initial interrogation was presented to the division commander, Brigadier General Nimrodi Aloni.
After presenting the findings of the investigation, Southern Command officers admitted that the estimates that the fighter had been shot by a sniper were incorrect "because there was a gap in collection and a gap in intelligence."
The collection of testimonies from Shmueli's commanders, together with the photographs seen from the Palestinian side, left no room for doubt.
"The fighter saw the terrorist shooting at him," they said.
The IDF attacked Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip last night in response to the fighter's injuries and clashes in the fence.
The navy fired at boats of Palestinians that deviated from the area allowed for fishing off the coast of the Strip.
Palestinians responded by firing machine guns at the planes and at Sderot, following which two houses were hit by bullets.
The IDF decided to reinforce the Gaza Division with additional forces.

Shmueli is hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva, while his life is still in danger. Fighters who took part in the fighting in the sector described confusion from the instructions they received, which led to dysfunction in front of the demonstration. "The opening instructions were not clear. On the one hand they explained to us what we should do if we were in danger of death, and on the other hand they warned us to get a shooting permit in exceptional cases, and told us that all shooting is documented and should not be reported. What do you understand from that? "Rubber firing took time. Meanwhile, hundreds of Palestinians reached the fence."
They said, "Fighters did not know they were in danger. They did not see armed terrorists approaching the fence," they added.
"They talked to us in general about the possibility of them being armed. No one warned us in real time about terrorists. A fighter would not take a weapon out inside the wall if he knew there were terrorists under him. Everyone talks about protesters. For us they were terrorists A lot of forces both on the ground and in the air, you are not really ready for it and then you have a mess. "

The fighter's father, Yossi Shmueli, also criticized the conduct of the forces, describing the incident as "a major blow to the army," as he put it.
"Of course there was a mess there, a leak. How did they get to the fence, since when are they not allowed to be shot? They came to kill him," he said, "Why does my son have to go to the hospital because of a demonstration?"
