The Northern District Police Chief, Shimon Lavi, testified today (Sunday) before the Meron Disaster Inquiry Committee, describing the chaotic scenes of that night's events.
He explained that the worldview of the police is not to restrict the audience at events on Mount Meron, for fear that a restriction would itself lead to disaster.
"We basically in Meron do not restrict audiences, this is the worldview over the years," he told the committee, "no district commander has restricted audiences, since any attempt to restrict audiences can cause a greater disaster."
He described the chain of events, and said that around midnight the event seemed to be going well.
"Towards midnight, the Toldot Aharon storks begin to organize for their lighting. In the midnight area, a few minutes before the lighting, I go on stage, and what I recognize [is] a completely routine event. I see no problem, everything works as usual. Eventually I tell the commander The space to check what is happening in the circles around, on the mountain, in traffic, etc., "he said.

"When I get to the HFK, at some point there are certain reports from the field about a person falling, another fall.
I of course take the driver and fly there, "he said." Without coming to the event I am already announcing a multi-casualty incident, arriving at the scene.
The arena - a very difficult, inconceivable arena, I recognize dozens of people lying next to people, and policemen next to soldiers evacuating civilians.
You must be a professional.
My only thought is that the wheel cannot be turned back. "
He went on to describe the difficult images.
"At the same time - stopping tens of thousands of people on the way to Meron, evacuating 250 wounded, and of course the lines filled with deaths, the policemen vomiting and a lot of crying, riots that developed in the grave compound," he said. "It's hard to lose a brother, a child, a father. My heart goes out to the wounded, to the families who did not recover. In the end I am the commander of the incident and I can not think. .
