The State Commission of Inquiry into the Meron Disaster Investigation began hearing evidence today (Sunday).

This is the first discussion that began at ten in the morning and is broadcast live from the Malcha Technology Park in Jerusalem.

The first witness to come up is the Northern District Police Chief, Superintendent Shimon Lavi.

The following discussions will also be heard in open court and some of them will be broadcast live on the committee's website.

The entrance to the hall will be allowed on the basis of available seating, in accordance with the Corona restrictions.

Entry is conditional on a security check and it is mandatory to wear a mask throughout the hearing.

Two weeks ago, several senior officials were summoned to testify, including retired Alon Asor - retired Northern District Police Chief, Yosef Schwinger - Director of the Center for the Development of Holy Places, Israel Deri - Commissioner for the Northern District at the Center for the Development of Holy Places, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz '- Chairman of the Committee of the Five and Rabbi of the Western Wall and the Holy Places, and Eli Freiner - Director of the Tomb Site of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai.

Last month, the State Comptroller, Netanyahu Engelman, decided to stop the special investigation he announced regarding the disaster on Mount Meron, due to the activity of the State Commission of Inquiry into the matter, which includes an investigation of all the procedures involved.

The Comptroller and his staff met with members of the committee chaired by retired Supreme Court President Miriam Naor.

The State Comptroller and his staff presented to the committee the audit methodology adopted by the state regarding the Mount Meron disaster so far and held a professional dialogue with the committee.

It will be recalled that the catastrophe of Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yohai in Meron occurred on April 30 this year, in which 45 men and children were killed and another 102 were injured due to crushing and suffocation due to the shortage. This is the largest civilian disaster that has occurred in the State of Israel. Following this, a national day of mourning was announced and later the establishment of a state commission of inquiry.
