Another delta mutation is spreading in the southern United States.
Israel and Great Britain report infections with the new mutation.
The sub-variant could be “even more contagious than the delta variant”.
London - The Delta variant dominates the infection rate in Germany.
The wild type alpha (B.1.1.7) no longer plays a role.
Alpha appeared in only 1.2 percent of the samples examined, reports the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in its current weekly report.
For comparison: the proportion of positive corona tests with the delta variant is 98.5 percent.
The authority refers to dates of the 31st calendar week (August 2 to 8, 2021).
Corona researchers in several countries are now warning of further mutations of the delta variant - the sub-variant called "AY.3".
The number of cases is still low.
But the data at hand are worrying.
“AY.3” seems to be even more contagious than the already highly contagious Delta variant.
"These are definitely the first clear signs of a potentially worrying variant," warned Christina Pagel, professor at University College London, on Twitter.
The number of infections in some parts of Great Britain with the Delta sub-variant "AY.3" is increasing significantly.
Everything is still at a low level, but the expert is alarmed.
It is conceivable that the variant will replace the original delta mutation.
Delta AY.3: "Should start preparing"
“There is a lot that we don't know about AY.3,” admits Pagel on Twitter.
"It could be more transferable than Delta, it could be more immune-evasive." In the USA, especially in the southern states of Missouri and Mississippi, the proportion of "AY.3" is already almost 50 percent.
That is no evidence that the new Delta variant brings with it an increased risk of infection, "but we have seen this before and should start preparing," writes Pagel.

New delta mutation "AY.3": Lauterbach warns of rapid vaccination success
Karl Lauterbach tweeted that the new coronavirus variant seems to be even more contagious than the Delta variant.
"That reminds us of how important it is to have a quick vaccination success," the SPD health expert continues.
And warns: "There will definitely be more dangerous variants than Delta."
In the UK and US, a new SarsCoV variant seems to be spreading, which seems to be even more contagious than the Delta variant.
Name previously AY.3.
This is a reminder of the importance of a quick vaccination success.

Is Delta AY.3 dangerous for Germany?
The RKI found the new sublines from Delta during the visual samples in the 31st calendar week (August 2nd to 8th). According to the RKI weekly report, “AY.1” was detected twice and “AY.3” 37 times - “which corresponds to a total of 3.6 percent of the sample”.
