Update from August 20, 3:59 p.m.:

Now it is official: Due to the increasing number of corona infections, the federal government is classifying Crete and other Greek holiday islands as a high-risk area from Tuesday (August 24).

The German press agency announced.

At the same time, the Canary Islands and Catalonia with the tourist metropolis of Barcelona and the beaches of the Costa Brava will be removed from the list of high-risk areas, as the Robert Koch Institute announced on Friday.

In addition to Crete, the southern Aegean with holiday islands such as Rhodes, Kos, Mykonos and Naxos is classified as a high-risk area in Greece.

These islands are currently full of tourists because of their nightlife, among other things, as the germ of the corona spread in Greece.

On Thursday (August 19), the Greek health authority registered 3273 new infections within 24 hours for the country with around eleven million inhabitants, and 20 people died.

High risk areas - what will change for vacationers?

People entering Germany who have not been vaccinated or have recovered must be in quarantine for at least five days.

For children under 12 years of age, the quarantine ends automatically after the fifth day of entry after a previous stay in a high-risk area.

Parts of Spain, on the other hand, are to be removed from the list of high-risk areas.

Castile, Asturias, Catalonia and Valencia are to be downgraded.

The Canary Islands are also no longer considered high-risk areas.

Last week, the RKI put Turkey on the list of high-risk areas.

That caused criticism shortly before school started in North Rhine-Westphalia.
