A pragmatic approach to Poland is preferable Israel today

2021-08-23T06:56:10.410Z

Israel's attempt to change the law and educate 40 million Poles is doomed to failure - and will only exacerbate the crisis • Israel must learn to overcome memories of the past and adopt a utilitarian foreign policy without sentimentality

Antisemitism is a social phenomenon more than two thousand years old, the manifestation of which can be found in writings from the period of the Roman Empire even before the crucifixion of Christ.

Throughout history, anti-Semitic views have taken root even in countries without a Jewish presence.

This phenomenon is not related to what the Jews do;

It is a social disease of the Gentiles.

The Jewish state, which by nature cares for Jews wherever they are, has adopted a central role in the war against anti-Semitism;

But it should not focus on curing a chronic disease that is spreading among the Gentiles.

It has a duty to protest within its limited resources, but it must remember that Israel cannot change the world, and requests to act without prejudice are not so much answered.

Moreover, it is the moral duty of the Gentiles to heal themselves from prejudices against the Jews.

They are the ones who should be ashamed that the Jew can not walk the streets of Brussels or Paris in a dome or with a Star of David without being bothered.

Nor is there any evidence that the many, many years of work invested by Jewish organizations in the war against anti-Semitism has benefited any country.

Israel should be attentive to and help the concerns of the Jewish communities, but the foreign policy of the nation state of the Jewish people should first and foremost focus on the realization of state interests, and see the good of the state above all other considerations.

Israel should not refrain from doing business with leaders who are not among the supporters of the Jewish people.

Jewish communities have survived in the past because the leaders of the Jewish communities had this political insight.

Israel's attempt to educate 40 million Poles is doomed to failure and will only exacerbate the crisis.

It would have been better to reach quiet agreements with the Polish government without provoking unnecessary tensions

The crisis in relations with Poland is an example of a deviation from the practical approach, and an excessive response to the law against the return of property that came into force in Poland.

While the motives for the law have some logic, they probably also include antisemitic tones.

In any case, the law was enacted in the Polish parliament by a democratically elected government in a sovereign state.

True, American government officials as well as international organizations have voiced criticism of the new law in Poland, but the downgrading of diplomatic relations by the State of Israel has been unnecessary and detrimental to its foreign relations.

The statement by Foreign Minister Yair Lapid that Israel does not fear antisemitic threats and does not ignore the shameful behavior of the anti-democratic government in Poland is extremely jarring.

It is factually and morally incorrect, and politically harmful.

Israel does not abound in sympathetic countries in the European Union, and Poland is an important country (the fifth largest in the population of the EU), and has already proven itself more than once to be a good friend of Israel.

It helps to withstand the anti-Israel impulses from Brussels (some of which are driven by traditional anti-Semitism).

Its votes in international forums are better for Israel than those of most European countries.

The bilateral relations are excellent and include an important security component.

Israel's attempt to change the law and educate 40 million Poles is doomed to failure, and will only exacerbate the crisis.

It would have been better to reach quiet agreements with the Polish government without provoking unnecessary tensions.

Israel must learn to overcome the memories of the past and adopt a utilitarian foreign policy without sentimentality, which promotes the power and well-being of the State of Israel.
