In close cooperation, the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forests Holzkirchen (AELF), together with the city of Tegernsee and the Holzkirchen Forest Owners Association (WBV), took Käferholz out of the protective forest with the help of a helicopter from Tuftenberg in Tegernsee.
The responsible district manager, Hans Feist, had previously found trees infested by the bark beetle during an inspection tour in the urban forest in a very steep location in the protective forest.
The freshly infested wood from the forest must be quickly processed and removed to prevent the beetle from infecting other trees.
The area is not accessible to trucks or a cable car.
In addition, the next generation of bark beetles was shortly before the excursion.
Insecticide-free measure against bark beetles
“The rapid removal of the infested trees by helicopter, which we proposed, was the only effective solution, despite the higher costs and the temporary noise generation,” explains Christian Webert, the forest division manager at the AELF in Holzkirchen. “It would be extremely dangerous to leave a source of infestation to its own devices, especially in the protective forest. The city of Tegernsee has done its duty to fight bark beetles in an exemplary manner. "
Insecticide-free measures to combat the bark beetle are financially supported by the Free State of Bavaria.
A smooth and safe course of the extraordinary mission requires good planning and organization, which was carried out in close cooperation between the AELF Holzkirchen, the city of Tegernsee, the WBV Holzkirchen and the contracted entrepreneurs.
Employees of the Tegernsee building yard have taken on the task of closing the affected hiking trails during the flight time.
The AELF announced that this was necessary for security reasons.

The helicopter from a specialist company was deployed for four hours and brought around 90 cubic meters of damaged wood into the valley.
The logs that had accumulated were delimbed immediately at the landing site, cut to length and taken to the sawmill the next day.
The summit material was chopped up.
“The action was associated with effort, costs and disruption.
But if we can take the handle of the bark beetle so quickly and effectively, the benefits for the forest, the city of Tegernsee and the forest visitors outweigh the benefits, ”summarize Christian Webert and forester Frederik Hiemenz, who coordinated the operation on site.
