For the 200th birthday of Pastor Sebastian Kneipp, the city of Schongau has given itself a nice present.

The Kneipp facility in Lechuferstraße, which has been badly run down over the years, shines in new splendor.

Schongau -

“A wonderful facility.” That says Marianne Porsche-Rohrer, Schongau city councilor, pharmacist and author.

The newly designed Schongau Kneipp facility should not only benefit tourism, "Schongau residents should also enjoy it".

The CSU local association had invited to a tour of the facility.

CSU local chairman Oliver Kellermann said, “We can only be grateful to Marianne Porsche-Rohrer for her commitment to this project”.

It was she who gave the initial spark.

In cooperation with Martin Blockhaus from the municipal building authority, she worked out and implemented the plan for the redesign of the Kneipp facility.

Renovation program used

In memory of Sebastian Kneipp's life and work as well as his services to the health of his fellow human beings, the Free State of Bavaria pays tribute to Pastor Kneipp in many ways. He offers the municipalities his support in the repair and redesign of their Kneipp facilities. The city of Schongau was happy to take advantage of this. In cooperation with the city councilor, the city applied for the funding program and created a concept for the renovation and expansion of the facility. With success: of the total costs of 50,000 euros, the Free State is assuming 18,000 euros. 27,500 euros are set for personal contributions. The city of Schongau will take over the remaining 4,500 euros. The topic was also presented to the city council.

In the first construction phase, the Kneipp facility was renovated according to the five pillars of Kneipp therapy.

Basin with inlet and outlet, around handrails made of stainless steel.

Next door is the arm plunge pool.

In the area of the traffic routes for people with reduced mobility, the paving was provided with narrow joints, the rest of the area with a paving with wide joints.

The “chessboard” was left as it is, but the paving stones are still being cleaned and damaged tiles replaced.

The chess pieces are stored in a box.

The key to this is in the splash.

Five pillars of Kneipp therapy

The five pillars of Kneipp therapy are represented by water, plants, exercise, nutrition and balance. Marianne Porsche-Rohrer is convinced that it is worth listening to what Kneipp teaches. "Tailor-made for people today." Kneipp divides his therapy: On the one hand there is hydrotherapy with arm bath, barefoot, cold running bath, chest wraps hot and cold. Pillar two: arnica as a panacea, soothing valerian, nettle and elderberry. Pillar three is dedicated to rest and exercise, pillar four to nutrition, and finally pillar five to inner order such as mindfulness, breathing, balance and art instead of pills. Sebastien Kneipp is said to have said once: "A glass of wine and a cigar have never harmed anyone."

A herb garden is planned in a second construction phase.

Councilor Bettina Buresch (Greens) does not think a herb garden makes sense at this point.

You think more of a pond with amphibians.

Marianne Porsche-Rohrer does not share this opinion.

“Dandelion, elderberry, Spitzweg and valerian grow here”.

Memory also of the Johannesbad in "Schongau"

After the on-site visit at the newly designed Kneipp facility, the CSU members marched a little further to the Lechwirt, "from the Kneipp to the pub," smiled Oliver Kellermann. Marianne Porsche-Rohrer took the opportunity to remember the former "Johannesbad zu Schongau" on Frauentorberg. It was built in 1886 with the completion of the Landsberg-Schongau railway line for the city of Schongau, which at that time had 2000 inhabitants, according to Sebastian Kneipp's basic principles for healing methods. “I can highly recommend this bath to all those who suffer,” said Sebastian Kneipp at the time. The bathing establishment with beautiful outdoor facilities was equipped with spacious bathrooms for administering spruce needle, steam and mud baths as well as a dining room.Munich Augustinertropfen and delicious wines as well as excellently prepared warm dishes were already part of the good service in the restaurant back then.

After a few years, however, the bathroom got into financial turmoil.

It was auctioned in 1897 for a bid of RM 24,510.

At that time, Johann Baptist Wandinger was awarded the contract.

By 1912 there were nine more changes of ownership, until the Schropp family acquired the property for 42,000 RM in 1913 and operated it as a hotel until 1976.

Today there is a row house settlement on the site of the former health resort.
