The corona numbers in NRW have almost doubled within a week.

The incidence is now over 100 again. Karl Lauterbach sounds the alarm.

Düsseldorf - The fourth Corona * wave in Germany is gradually picking up speed.

The nationwide seven-day incidence rose from 36.2 to 56.4 within one week.

That comes from the figures of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) from Monday morning (23 August).

The development in North Rhine-Westphalia is particularly drastic.

The incidence there is now back in three digits.

SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach sounds the alarm.

Lauterbach warns: "NRW is losing control" - seven-day incidence over 100

According to the RKI, the seven-day incidence * in North Rhine-Westphalia is now 103.3.

This is by far the highest value nationwide - Hamburg has the second highest incidence at 71.6.

According to experts, the rate at which the number of infections * has increased is particularly worrying.

A week ago, the incidence in North Rhine-Westphalia was 57.2 - around half lower than on Monday.

“NRW is losing control,” Lauterbach warned on Sunday (August 22) via Twitter.

"If we carry on like this until the federal election, too many people will become seriously ill in the next five weeks," the SPD health expert feared.

Corona hotspot NRW: Lauterbach calls for "2G where possible"

In view of the rapidly increasing incidence values, he called for immediate action and a sharper Corona * course.

“That means: 2G where possible,” says Lauterbach.

The so-called 3G rule now applies everywhere in North Rhine-Westphalia - vaccinated, recovered or tested.

According to the Corona Protection Ordinance, it applies from an incidence of 35, for example, for visits to indoor restaurants.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, all urban and rural districts have not only exceeded the 35 limit, but even exceeded the value 50. According to Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU), however, this will soon be deleted as a benchmark. The nationwide leader in incidence is the city of Leverkusen with a value of 205.8. The five subsequent German corona hotspots are also all in North Rhine-Westphalia: Solingen (170.2), Bielefeld (161.9), Mönchengladbach (156.7), Krefeld (142.9) and Dortmund (142.3).

“We have to act now because the incidence is rising too much,” explained Lauterbach.

"The idea that we let it go and that anyone who was infected could have been vaccinated puts too many people at risk, especially children," he clarified.

The expert warned that there would soon be more than 100,000 long Covid cases.

Lauterbach also sees a risk of corona infection with long train journeys - and also calls for the 3G rule for trains *.
