Deutsche Bahn (DB) is planning an ICE maintenance facility in Nuremberg.

The plans are now being criticized by the Nature Conservation Federation.

Nuremberg / Munich - There is a dispute between Deutsche Bahn * and the Bund Naturschutz (BN).

The reason: The planned ICE maintenance facility in Nuremberg is too big, as the environmentalists criticized.

The construction can only be implemented on all areas in question with major environmental interventions and is therefore highly controversial, said the chairman of the BN in Bavaria, Richard Mergner, on Monday (23 August).

"But it can also be done in a much more space-saving way." Deutsche Bahn rejected the request.

Nuremberg: environmentalists reprimand Deutsche Bahn: plans are "oversized"

The BN called for further locations to be found and for less space to be used.

"The ICE plant is important, but it can just as easily be implemented in a more environmentally friendly way," said the deputy state representative of the BN, Kai Frobel.

Specifically, the BN called for an area of 26 hectares and 2.3 kilometers in length.

The current plans criticize the environmentalists as "oversized".

According to DB information, an operating area of 35 to a maximum of 45 hectares is planned. A DB spokeswoman said that the original planning had already been optimized in the spring and that the length requirement was reduced from around 5.5 kilometers to around 3.2 kilometers. In order to be able to service, maintain and clean the trains, the plant must be designed for up to 25 ICE trains with a length of up to 400 meters. “Under these premises, our planning has already been optimized to reduce space. A significantly smaller ICE plant in the Nuremberg area is inconceivable for DB, ”she said. The protection of people and the environment is taken very seriously. Investigations and expert opinions ensure that nature is not interfered with more than necessary.

Nuremberg: The location of the future maintenance facility is still unclear

The exact location of the plant, which, according to Deutsche Bahn, will cost around 400 million euros and will create 450 jobs, has not yet been determined. Initially, nine areas in the Nuremberg area * will be examined. The state government moved away from one of them - in the Altenfurt / Fischbach districts - in June. Prime Minister Markus Söder reported from the Munich State Chancellery in June. This makes it possible to expand the list of nine alternative locations proposed by Deutsche Bahn so far in the northern Bavarian region. The DB hit the headlines in recent weeks due to the wage dispute with the GDL. Strikes that lead to train cancellations and delays strain the nerves of train travelers. (
