Opinion | The time has come to hand over the management of the Temple Mount to the police Israel today

2021-08-23T15:14:15.459Z

The Israel Police closed the Temple Mount to Jews only due to a "Muslim holiday", without any justification • 54 years have passed since its liberation and unification but it does not appear that Israeli sovereignty has been applied to all parts of the city.

On Rosh Chodesh Elul last day, a day when hundreds of Jews planned to ascend the Temple Mount, including one large group in which senior officers from the "Security" movement were to ascend the mountain together with a group of activists in the "In our hands - for the Temple Mount" organization, Israel Police closed the mountain to Jews due "Muslim holiday."

This closure came without prior notice to the public, and without any justification.

Since when is a Muslim holiday a reason for the closure of territories in the State of Israel to Jews?

Hundreds were forced to cancel their arrival, some booked a hotel or an accompanying tour of Jerusalem and some even arrived at the compound that morning and found the entrance locked.

The situation on the Temple Mount is an issue that has put Israeli sovereignty to the test for many years.

During the Six Day War, the IDF conquered the Sinai Peninsula, the Golan Heights, Judea and Samaria and, of course, liberated Jerusalem, the holiest place for the Jewish people. On the face of it, Jews' access to the Western Wall plaza, and more importantly, The object in this, but as stated, thoughts separately and reality separately.

The Israeli leadership at the time feared the wrath of the Arab world.

Defense Minister Moshe Dayan was quoted in the cabinet as saying, "Why do we have all this Vatican?", But despite his opposition, the Old City was liberated.

The defense minister then decided to leave the management of the Temple Mount in the hands of the Muslim Waqf.

As part of the situation that has existed since then, the ascent of Jews to the Temple Mount has been and still is restricted and is permitted through one gate - the "Mughrabi Gate", now the "Hillel Gate", with heavy police escort. The presence of the Israel Police is supposed to symbolize the state's control and sovereignty over the most important place for the Jewish people, but this is not the case. In practice, the Israel Police is part of the problem on the mountain - the police, after so many years in which they were asked to run the Temple Mount, began to develop their own theory of restrictions, disturbances and harassment. It restricts the entry of Jews to the Temple Mount for various reasons, signs immigrants for unclear procedural documents, extends prohibitions and is usually conducted without the required sensitivity towards Jewish worshipers.

Moreover, the entry of Knesset members into the Temple Mount compound is extremely complicated and sometimes even prevented.

The law does not restrict the movement of MKs in the State of Israel, but in practice, the entry of MKs Shikli and Ben-Gvir was recently prevented by a decision of the Jerusalem District Commander, contrary to the provisions of the law. Jewish and Israeli symbols, such as the Israeli flag - Imber, forbidden, this is what sovereignty in the Land of Zion and Jerusalem looks like today.

Undoubtedly, the presence of the police at the scene is important and critical, in order to maintain security.

At the point of greatest friction between two conflicting peoples for nearly 150 years, a police presence is required.

But the police are not supposed to manage the compound, its main function is to monitor and maintain order.

When the management of such a compound is in the hands of police officers, the result is the same closure of the mountain and the abolition of the immigration of hundreds of Jews without any justification.

The management of the holy place must be transferred to a government authority, like any other site in Israel, whether by the authority itself, or by a supported association.

It has been 54 years since Jerusalem was liberated and united, but it does not appear that Israeli sovereignty has been united over all parts of the city. The Temple Mount remains under the control of the Muslim Waqf, and the Israeli public remains with the famous saying, resonating in the empty room: "The Temple Mount is in our hands."
