'The doctor', who was an important leader of organized crime on the border, was handed over to Mexican authorities on Monday to be prosecuted for organized crime.

The former leader of the Tijuana Cartel, Eduardo Arellano Félix, alias 'El doctor', was handed over to Mexican authorities on Monday at the Matamoros-Brownsville International Bridge, after he was released from prison in the United States.

Arellano Félix will be prosecuted in Mexico for crimes of organized crime, as announced by the Attorney General's Office (FGR).

'The doctor' got out of jail in the United States early

last week due to his cooperation with authorities.

He was serving a 15-year sentence for drug trafficking that began in 2013 when he pleaded guilty.

The Foreign Minister of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, had announced on August 18 that Arellano Félix, who led the Tijuana cartel along with his brothers, would not be deported to Mexico, citing at that time a change in his status and the possibility that it might be declared protected witness in the United States.

However, agents of the Immigration and Customs Service (ICE, in English) escorted him across the border bridge that separates Texas from Tamaulipas on Monday to deport him.

Mexican police and military were already waiting for him on the other side in the middle of a strong security operation.
