Question from Pierre (Paris)
Hello, I am going on vacation to Rome at the beginning of September.
Is it true that museums are free for the French?

Dear Pierre,
Rome's municipal museums are free ... Unfortunately not for all French people, but only for Parisians. Explanation: the French and Italian capitals are linked by an exclusive twinning. Established on January 30, 1956, this pact has the motto: “
Only Rome is worthy of Paris; only Paris is worthy of Rome
”.
Little known, this twinning offers Parisians the opportunity to enter for free in the museums managed by the city of Rome. Please note, this does not apply to historical monuments such as the Colosseum or the Vatican. To benefit from this free admission, it is sufficient, at the entrance of one of these establishments, to show an identity document proving a Parisian address. One last detail: this device concerns the permanent collections but not systematically temporary exhibitions.
And the love story between the two metropolises does not end there.
In 1959, Rome even dedicated a street in the Castro Pretorio district in Paris, the Via Parigi.
A commemorative plaque and an ancient column surmounted by a bronze caravel, symbol of the City of Light, have since been installed there.
Conversely, a she-wolf which symbolizes the founding of the Eternal City and the legend of Romulus and Rémus in bronze, similar to the one housed by the Musei Capitolini, was installed and inaugurated in 1962 in the heart of the Latin Quarter, in the Paul Painlevé square.
You know everything.
Buone vacanze!
