Hundreds of thousands of people stood cheering and waving at train stations and on the streets and greeted the strangers who came to us. A wave of great helpfulness and solidarity swept through our country. In the district of Ebersberg, too, many people came together to take care of the new fellow citizens who had finally found a place to live in freedom, democracy and without fear of persecution and death.
German soldiers have been deployed in Afghanistan since 2001. Thousands of people lost their lives, including German soldiers and countless innocent civilians. The war in the Hindu Kush brought suffering and misery to millions of people. German military and foreign policy bears a share of the responsibility for this, which Germany must not evade. Wars are a major cause of flight and displacement. Board member Thomas Schmidt-Behounek points out that the new citizens of 2015 have now become friends and neighbors who go to work regularly, pay taxes and have enriched our society.
