The autobahn should be completed in 2024

On Monday, the starting shot was given for the eight-lane expansion of the A 99 between the Aschheim / Ismaning and Kirchheim junctions.

The federally owned Autobahn GmbH is currently building substructures for a makeshift bridge at the junction in Kirchheim.

The bridge that currently connects Kirchheim with the southeast industrial area in Aschheim will be demolished.

The 48-meter-wide motorway should be completed in 2024.

There will be severe traffic restrictions during the work.

“The motorway ring is not a Munich affair.

It has a European dimension, ”said Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) yesterday at the groundbreaking ceremony on the A 99. His ministry expects traffic to grow by 15 percent by 2030.

At peak times, the hard shoulder should be used for up to ten lanes, says Scheuer.

"There is more and more traffic"

"There is more and more traffic," said Michael Kordon, director of Autobahn GmbH in southern Bavaria.

Much like Kordon, intelligent traffic planners must have thought in the 1970s before the A 99 was built: At that time, it was assumed that traffic would continue to increase.

The expansion of the 3.8 kilometer section will cost 125 million euros.

Scheuer said proudly that his ministry had spent a billion euros on transport projects in just one week.

The investments in the section also include “the most modern road surface” and “noise barriers up to seven meters high”.

The transport minister promises that this will reduce the noise by 50 percent.

Aschheim's mayor Thomas Glashauser (CSU) considers the measures to be insufficient: on Monday he also called for a speed limit for the section.

"Additional track does not solve any problems"

Markus Büchler, Member of the Green Party from Oberschleissheim, calls for “attractive alternatives” to the car: “The additional lane does not solve any problems because the traffic does not have the autobahn as its destination, but our residential and commercial areas,” says Büchler when asked by the Munich resident Mercury.

“Bus and train” as well as cycle superhighways would have to be expanded.

And trucks should be shifted to rail.

Minister Scheuer does not want to have forgotten cyclists: "We are building cycle paths like never before," he said yesterday.
