The Maghreb conflict:

"Algeria is severing its diplomatic ties with Morocco," Algerian Foreign Minister Ramatan Lamamara said tonight (Tuesday).

At the same time, although the severance of diplomatic relations will take effect from today, the Foreign Minister noted that the consulates will remain open.

At a press conference, the Algerian minister accused Rabat of "hostile actions" against his country.

This is against the background of a border conflict in Western Sahara and the renewal of Morocco's relations with Israel.

"It has been historically proven that the Kingdom of Morocco has not one day stopped carrying out hostile actions against our country since independence," Lamamara claimed, pointing to evidence of cooperation between terrorist groups and Morocco.

The minister also accused Morocco of using Pegasus software for Moroccan interests.

Although the severance of diplomatic relations will take effect from today, the Foreign Minister noted the consulates will remain open.

A decade-long conflict has erupted between Algeria and Morocco.

In the 1960s, the two countries fought in the "sand war" that ended in a Moroccan victory.

In 1975, Spain declared its abandonment of the Western Sahara and since then Algeria has supported the Polisario front seeking to establish an independent state on the ground.

This support included food deliveries, equipment transfers and training.

As you may recall, as part of the renewal of relations between Israel and Morocco, the United States recognized Rabat's sovereignty in Western Sahara.

On the other hand, throughout the Algerian civil war in the 1990s, Morocco was accused of supporting the "armed Islamic group of Algeria", which acted against the government. Morocco has denied the allegations but as a result the border between the two countries was closed in 1994.
