The massive presence of

capybaras

in Nordelta - "invasion" or "reconquest", depending on the point of view of who expresses it - and the complications for the inhabitants of that neighborhood of the Tigre party put these rodents at the center of the agenda of news.

However, it is not the first time that a conflict has arisen in a closed neighborhood of Greater Buenos Aires with capybaras as involuntary victims.

A little more than a year ago, in full phase of strict isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic, a group of capybaras was expelled from the country Abril, a closed neighborhood of

Hudson

, in the Berazategui party, in which several celebrities, including athletes, live. artists and politicians.

They were not thousands, as in Nordelta, but much less, with the difference that they had been taken to the place, which is not their natural habitat, to add an attraction.

A year later,

seven survive in a shelter located in Tigre

, after having overcome a few vicissitudes.

Two were less fortunate: they were

shot

dead

without knowing who was responsible.

The case unleashed the fury of protectionists.

“In the country April they had placed

two decorative capybaras, a male and a female,

and between them they began to reproduce.

A community of more than 18 or 20 capybaras was formed, ”says activist Fernando Pieroni, who at the time was one of those who made the complaint.

At that time, residents of the neighborhood itself made the decision to contact the Fauna Directorate of the Province of Buenos Aires.

“The authorities explained to them that they were animals that they had put there themselves, and they had to decide what to do.

The country hired a fumigation company that decided to

throw that group of nine capybaras to the other side of the fence,

believing that because the fence overlooks Pereyra Iraola Park, they would adapt and survive, ”continues Pieroni.

The story was not like that, having been raised from birth in a domestic environment, the capybaras did not know how to function on their own, and they remained

two months behind the fence

that separated them from their home, looking at the rest of the capybaras, who they were on the inside side of the country.

"We spent

two months fighting with everyone,

we made it viral and we managed to get the Wildlife Directorate to take them away," says Pieroni.

As now in Nordelta, within the neighborhood there were neighbors in favor of doing something to get rid of the capybaras and others who did not agree with the exile.

Some made known through social networks the presence of

poison traps

that had been installed around the fence that borders the lagoon.

The case was transferred to the Justice, who summoned the head of the Pereyra Iraola Park Rangers, Alba Ale, to act as an expert.

The capybaras of country April

“First they summoned me to guide a group of policemen to find two capybaras who appeared shot.

It's very difficult to get to the place, that's why they called me ”, says Ale.

“I had a second participation when I was asked about the lifestyle of capybaras.

This was intended to determine if it was affecting them that they had been left on

the other side of the fence without even water

.

I was even the one who denounced at the time that the country had stolen half a lagoon from the Park, ”he adds.

After the judicial instance, the seven evicted and surviving capybaras were transferred to

ECAS

(Wild Animal Breeding Station), which is within the Pereyra Iraola Park and is administered by the Ministry of Agrarian Development of the Province of Buenos Aires.

Some time later, at the insistence of environmentalists, there was a new transfer to the place where they are now,

the Delta Terra Reserve

, a space administered by the Félix de Azara Foundation next to the Rama Negra Chico stream, in the area of the Espera stream and the San Antonio river, from the

Tigre

Delta

.
