The Royal Society today announced the winners of this year's "Royal Medal".

Professor Lu Yuming of the Faculty of Medicine of Chinese University has become the winner of the "Royal Medal" for Biology, and is the first Chinese winner since the award was established nearly 200 years ago.

He researched the use of plasma DNA diagnostic technology, pioneered "non-invasive prenatal diagnosis" methods, and early diagnosis of Down syndrome and a variety of genetic diseases. He has made revolutionary achievements in medicine and laid an important cornerstone for other types of liquid biopsy.

Lu Yuming hopes that this award can encourage and attract more young people to experience the fun and significance of science. He pointed out that the future of science depends on attracting the next generation of the best talents to explore the scientific field and find the next scientific breakthrough.

Lu Yuming is currently the Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Medicine of CUHK, the head of the Department of Chemical Pathology and the director of the Li Ka-shing Institute of Health Sciences. He is known as the "father of non-invasive prenatal testing."

Lu Yuming is currently the Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Medicine of CUHK, the head of the Department of Chemical Pathology and the director of the Li Ka-shing Institute of Health Sciences. He is known as the "father of non-invasive prenatal testing."

He joined CUHK in 1997. In the same year, he announced that there is a high concentration of fetal DNA in the plasma of pregnant women.

Lu Yuming and his team later developed a non-invasive detection method for Down syndrome, and successfully applied DNA analysis-based "non-invasive prenatal diagnosis technology" from scientific research to clinical diagnosis. Now it has been used in dozens of countries around the world. Widely adopted, benefiting millions of pregnant women every year.

In addition, Lu Yuming's team used large-scale parallel sequencing technology and innovative bioinformatics technology to analyze trace DNA in maternal plasma, successfully deciphering the whole genome map of the fetus, so as to predict a variety of genetic diseases early.

In terms of organ transplantation, Lu Yuming proved that the DNA of the transplanted organ is present in the plasma of the recipient of the organ, which later became a new method for monitoring rejection after organ transplantation.

In recent years, an interdisciplinary research team led by Yuming Lu has successfully applied DNA sequencing technology to cancer detection, which can non-invasively find many types of changes in the cancer genome.

Recently, Lu Yuming's scientific research team successfully developed a blood test that can detect dozens of cancers, and launched it for clinical applications in cooperation with a US biotechnology company.

Lu Yuming hopes that this award can attract more young people to experience the fun and significance of science.

For being the first Chinese winner of the "Royal Medal" in biology, Lu Yuming said that his research work on non-invasive prenatal diagnosis and liquid biopsy has been recognized by the Royal Society, and he is very encouraged and honored.

He also said that the development of "non-invasive prenatal diagnosis technology" is not only a personal work, but also an achievement of the entire team.

He thanked his family, mentors, colleagues, students and friends who have been inspiring, supporting and accompanying him on the road of scientific research.

Lu Yuming hopes that this award can attract more young people to experience the fun and significance of science. He pointed out that the future of science depends on whether it can attract the next generation of the best talents to explore the scientific field and find the next scientific breakthrough.

Professor Lu Yuming of CUHK was awarded the "Scientific Oscar" referring to the talents influencing Sino-US relations coming to Hong Kong. Professor Lu Yuming of CUHK: The industrialization of scientific research results is gaining attention. Hong Kong scientific research personnel should seize the opportunity.
