Erding - A fresh coat of paint helps the beautiful tower in Erding to look beautiful again.

In the course of the construction work on Landshuter Straße in front of the Erdingen town hall, the city now used the closure to renovate the tower.

Especially the inside of the archway was badly battered, because trucks repeatedly brush the walls as they drive through.

The 36.3 meter high gate tower with its ogival niches in the Landshut late Gothic style characterizes the cityscape.

It was given its appearance in 1664 by a baroque dome.

The Schöne Turm, along with the city tower, is one of Erding's landmarks.

It is also called Landshuter Tor, Ostertor, Kreuztor and Heilig-Geist-Tor.

The building has been renovated and changed several times, partly destroyed and rebuilt in the Thirty Years War (1618-48).

The tower is mentioned for the first time in the land register of 1403, the register of possessions of the Neustift monastery in Freising.

It says that a citizen of Erdingen gave the Freising monks a garden "in front of the Easter gate".

For many years the year of construction was 1408.

In the series “Erdinger Land”, art historian Gerhard Koschade explained what the rocket-shaped additions to the side of the tower are all about. The flanking turrets should give the structure a defensive appearance. Because once the beautiful tower belonged together with three other city gates to the medieval fortifications with high walls, battlements and several defensive towers, surrounded by an artificial moat with rampart.

The maintenance cost a lot of money. Therefore, the city demanded a paving duty from 1482 on the four gates for carts going through. In the 19th century, the historical architectural bond that once united the city into an organic structure was destroyed. Today people in Erding consider themselves lucky that the Schöne Turm was spared.
