From Saturday, organizers and restaurateurs in Hamburg will have the opportunity to only allow people who have been vaccinated and recovered to enter.

The 2G option is voluntary.

Hamburg - Gastronomy, clubs, pubs and cultural institutions in Hamburg can almost completely use their capacities again from Saturday (August 28), provided that people who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus * are not allowed in.

Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) announced this on Tuesday (August 24) at a press conference.

The Senate had previously decided on the so-called "2G option model".

Corona in Germany: Hamburg will be introducing the "2G option" from Saturday

Organizers can therefore decide from Saturday whether they want to only allow vaccinated and convalescents in the future.

In return, they are released from the Corona * protection requirements that are no longer required.

In this way, they can increase the visitor capacity or offer a free choice of seats without mandatory distance requirements.

Exceptions apply to children and young people.

There is no obligation to use the new 2G option.

According to the Senate, providers can decide for themselves whether they will use this in the future or whether they will remain open to everyone according to the previous rules.

Then, however, stricter requirements or test obligations for event guests apply, among other things.

“2G option” in Hamburg: no access for unvaccinated people - but fewer requirements

The 2G option is aimed at theaters, cinemas, clubs, trade fair operators, restaurants, hotels, swimming pools and fitness studios, among others.

Organizers of sporting events with visitors, folk festivals or educational courses should also be able to use them after their own consideration.

For the time being, however, it is still mandatory to wear medical masks indoors.

Organizers and restaurants who want to use the 2G option must register this online.

The staff with customer contact must then be vaccinated or recovered.

At the entrance to the event locations, it must also be clearly stated that unvaccinated persons are not allowed to enter.

In addition, when using the 2G option, the organizers and restaurateurs must check whether the guests have proof of vaccination or recovery, including ID.

In the event of a violation of the provisions, fines of between EUR 1,000 and EUR 20,000 are imminent.

The Senate has already announced strict controls.

"2G option" in Hamburg: "Restrictions must be proportionate"

Mayor Tschentscher justified the decision to introduce the 2G option with the fact that vaccinated and convalescent people did not play a significant role in the infection process *.

He emphasized: "Restrictions must be proportionate and may only apply for as long as they are necessary to combat the pandemic." There are also other arguments, such as greater planning security for companies.

Tschentscher also stated that the 2G option would not be “questioned” even in the event of further “steps backwards” in the corona pandemic and a further increase in the number of infections.

However, the mayor of Hamburg stressed that there were then restrictions on the unvaccinated.

He described the current corona wave as the "wave of the unvaccinated".

On Tuesday, the seven-day incidence * in Hamburg was 71.4 - and thus above the national average.

Tschentscher ruled out another general lockdown.
