Kathy Hochul was sworn in as New York State's first female governor Tuesday shortly after the clock struck midnight.

The new president took office after ten years in command of Andrew Cuomo, whose resignation came after 11 complaints from women of sexual harassment in their work environment.

This Tuesday at 10 am, a more formal swearing-in ceremony will be held with the presence of members of the Hochul family and the other two top state politicians, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Majority Leader of the Senate, Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

Albany's trio of top politicians have been known for decades as the "three men in a room," famous for striking closed-door deals on legislative and budget matters.

With Hochul joining Stewart-Cousins in the top spots, the dynamic now turns to two women and one man.

Hochul, 62, is scheduled to make her first formal speech as governor Tuesday afternoon, where she is expected to communicate her priorities.

He has refrained from going into details about his plans since Cuomo announced he would be leaving office this month, claiming that the state can only have one governor at a time, but has emphatically indicated that one of his first orders of the day would be a face mask mandate. for the next school year.

"I did due diligence to determine the authority of the Health Department, and I hope to make an announcement on this issue on Tuesday. But people should be ready," Hochul told reporters on Friday.

Other urgent issues include the state's moratorium on evictions, set to expire at the end of the month, as well as reform of the $ 2.7 billion rental aid fund and its $ 2.1 billion worker aid fund.

State Sen. Jessica Ramos told The City's website that she had already met with Hochul about the workers' fund.

"There are transparency and accessibility issues that we have already begun to discuss," Ramos said.

Hochul, a former member of Congress from Buffalo and lieutenant governor since 2015, has promised a more transparent and less abrasive legislature than that of the often combative Cuomo.

"No one will describe my Administration as a toxic work environment," he told reporters after Cuomo announced his resignation after a report from the state attorney general's office revealed that he allegedly sexually harassed 11 women and that his office was a hostile work environment.

Hochul announced two key appointments to his administration on Monday, naming Karen Persichilli Keogh as his secretary, who for all intents and purposes is the governor's number 2, and Elizabeth Fine as an advisor.

Hochul explained that the couple "brings the depth of knowledge, leadership and experience that will be needed to meet the challenges New Yorkers face."

Keogh has worked for Hillary Clinton, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, and former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, and Clinton expressed her support in a tweet Monday.

In a resignation speech Monday, Cuomo said the state faces numerous challenges, some of them from the delta variant of the coronavirus, and said he thought Hochul was up to the task.

"I think he will rise to the challenge. We all wish him success,

" said Cuomo.

As he used to do as governor, Cuomo also took a not-so-veiled blow against New York Mayor Bill de Blasio while praising his long-awaited successor, Democratic candidate Eric Adams.

"I think it will bring a new philosophy and competence to the position," said Cuomo.

De Blasio met with Hochul for about an hour last week.

"It was a good, healthy, cordial conversation, emphasize the word cordial, which I really appreciate," De Blasio told reporters.
