Violent storms, change from sunshine to rain within a few minutes - climate change is becoming more and more noticeable.

A panel discussion has now taken place in the wide-screen cinema in Gauting.

Gauting - Plenty of visitors came to the wide screen cinema in Gauting for Climate Day as part of the Five Lakes Film Festival.

The “Climate and Cinema” section was created through a collaboration with Alex and Anne Eichberger from the “unsklima.jetzt” initiative.

For the first time, an award for the best climate film will also be presented in this context.

Among others, Dr.

Jennifer Müller-Williams from the German Weather Service.

She explained the development of climate change and the explosiveness of the topic.

Müller-Williams drew possible scenarios of how the greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere will develop and what possible consequences we could face.

Her grim conclusion: "If we don't do anything to protect the climate, we can expect 28 fewer frost days per year in Bavaria in the near future."

In the year 2100 siesta might be the order of the day

This goes hand in hand with major general climatic changes. “We could expect a climate in Munich that is similar to that in Rijeka.” In 2071 or 2100, a siesta in the midday heat, as it is everyday in Croatia, could also be a reality in this country. She stressed that adaptations to the effects of climate change are essential.

After the startling lecture, Alex Eichberger moderated a discussion with other guests.

Fridays for Future activist Merit Willemer emphasized the importance of change: “Radical change becomes uncomfortable, but that is out of proportion if we do nothing.

We have already cracked 1.2 degrees, that cannot be reversed. ”Author Jutta Doberstein referred to the 2015 climate conference in Paris, at which 197 nations set themselves the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees .

She emphasized Germany's responsibility to do something for climate protection, but also pointed out the important global exchange so that the overall goal can be achieved.

Filmmakers in responsible positions

Films can also play an important role in informing the population. Therefore, a film by director Franz Böhm was shown, which deals with climate change. Böhm sees filmmakers in a responsible position anyway. “With 'Dear future children' we noticed, no matter where we show the film, that the audience is not even aware of the topics in the form. Sometimes it takes a certain fate to be told in order to understand the effects, ”he emphasized.

But not only the film presence, but also media reports on climate change were discussed. In this context, business editor Jan Schmidbauer spoke of visibility: “Corona was very tangible, everyone was wearing masks at once. The readers' need for information went in this direction. ”Moderator Alex Eichberger pointed out the most recent severe weather disasters in North Rhine-Westphalia:“ When the disaster was over, for many it meant 'out of sight, out of mind'. Climate change should, however, no longer come out of mind, even if it is lost sight of. ”Because: unlike the corona pandemic, the climate crisis cannot simply be vaccinated away.

The climate discussion round was rounded off with the handover of a certificate to wide-screen operator Matthias Helwig.

According to a calculation by the company “Fokus Zukunft Starnberg”, he compensates 118 tons of CO2 during the Five Lakes Festival by using climate certificates that support environmental projects in developing and emerging countries.
