However, you cannot get rid of the diligently fed birds without any effort and expense.

Schongau

- The Schongau pigeon problem was recently a topic in the city council.

As reported, the birds are becoming more and more intrusive and sometimes even fly to passers-by.

With one reason: the animals are regularly fed in the old town.

And apparently not only from individual bird lovers, which is why the city issued a special ban on pigeon feeding two years ago.

Again and again guests are observed at Marienplatz, who supply the city birds with ice cream cones, for example, reported some city councilors at the meeting.

Many birds have long since lost their fear of humans.

In the meantime it has even been observed that the pigeons - with the doors open - are tripping into a bakery.

Initial talks are underway with the animal welfare association

Initial talks are already underway with the animal welfare association in the Weilheim-Schongau district.

For the city of Schongau, Deputy Mayor Daniela Puzzovio took the topic in hand and sat down with Janine Weigelt, the chairman of the animal welfare association based on Wielenbacher Straße in Schongau.

"Because just building a pigeon house is not enough," said Puzzovio in an interview with the Schongauer Nachrichten.

"A pigeon house has to be cleaned, the animals have to be fed and the eggs have to be exchanged for dummies." Ultimately, the aim is to reduce the pigeon population on a sustainable basis.

It is still far too early to assess the situation for Schongau

To be able to assess the situation for Schongau, it is still much too early, so Weigelt when asked by Schongauer Nachrichten.

She cannot answer whether there are too many pigeons living in Schongau.

And of course Weigelt also has an eye on animal welfare: the pigeons in Schongau are anything but species-appropriate: “Waste and ice cream cones weaken the animals.” Daniela Puzzovio sees it this way too: If the animals are properly nourished, the faeces look completely different off, they are decried as 'rats of the air'. "

But because pigeons are local, they stay in town and try to eat, explains Weigelt.

One now has to determine where they nest and where a pigeon house or pigeon house within the city makes sense.

It should be a cooperation project, volunteers are also needed

And then it's also about finding out who to take on board with the pigeon project, because one could imagine a cooperation project in which, in addition to the city and the animal protection association, the pigeon breeding association Peiting, a supervising veterinarian and volunteers are also on board .

"We are on the right track," said Daniela Puzzovio yesterday, the first measures to relocate the Schongau city pigeons have already been put together.

First and foremost are the counting of the pigeons and the information of the citizens.

Too many pigeons in the old town: that's planned

Every citizen can take part and email photos of groups of pigeons with information on the number and location to the address

stadttauben.sog@gmail.com

.

The citizens should be informed and supporters found.

There should also be an appeal for donations.

Information stands, flyers and an appearance on Facebook and Instagram under

# stadttauben-sog

are in planning.

Anyone who would like to get involved can also get in touch via email, the volunteers should be instructed.

It is then important to search for the pigeon nesting places, for example in niches or attics.

These should also be reported to the city by email.

When a suitable location for a pigeon house is found, this is planned and the feeding of the pigeons begins.

Helpers then exchange the clutch

A pigeon house has just been built in the city of Landsberg, but the effort is great

In Landsberg, too, the pigeon population in the old town is much too high, but there you are already a few steps further and have recently built a pigeon house.

This example shows that a lot of work and time, but also money, has to be invested.

In Landsberg, the value of one percent of the population has been accepted as a tolerable amount of city pigeons.

With around 30,000 inhabitants, this would be 300 pigeons for Landsberg.

When recorded in June / July last year, however, just under 350 animals had already been counted.

Experts assume that this number will have to be doubled - so around 700 city pigeons live or lived in Landsberg.

Similarly, the maximum number of city pigeons in Schongau with around 12,000 inhabitants would be around 120.

Various possible solutions had been investigated in Landsberg

Various possible solutions had been investigated for Landsberg, which could also apply similarly to Schongau. The most cost-effective solution had been found to be the installation of well-sealed dovecotes in unused attics, ideally of course in municipal buildings. When asked by the Landsberg city administration, the monument office was anything but enthusiastic - the city is, like Schongau, a listed building. In Landsberg you could most likely imagine dovecotes on flat roofs, which, however, also have to be looked after. Other options such as pigeon houses on tall wooden pillars in open space or even a pigeon tower that is accessible from the inside were not pursued - maintenance is too difficult or the costs are too high.

Landsberger Taubenhaus is on the Lechwehr and is like a hotel with full board

Ultimately, they had agreed on a large pigeon house, which was set up west of the Lechwehr, so very centrally near Landsberg's old town.

The final invoice is not yet available, said press spokeswoman Susanne Flügel on request.

Between 4,000 and 6,000 euros was planned in advance for the construction, a city bird hotel with full board - including feeding, nesting cells and seating.

For the current year, costs of around 15,000 euros are set, for the following years 9,000 euros per year, including for looking after the animals.

The administration had estimated in advance that one would have to set around 750 euros per 100 animals per month.
