Munich - The corona virus * is spreading more and more in Germany.

The Robert Koch Institute reports a 7-day incidence of 58.0 for August 24, 2021.

Bavaria is even lower, the 7-day incidence in the Free State was 41.1 on Monday (23 August).

However, many Bavarian districts and cities, including Munich, have already broken the corona limit value of 50.

What effects does this development have for consumers who want to run errands in DIY stores * from Obi, Hagebau, Toom, Hornbach or Bauhaus?

The threshold value of 50 for the 7-day incidence * still applies.

If this mark is exceeded in a district or an independent city on three consecutive days, the corona rules for retail will be tightened there from the next but one day.

Corona rules at Obi, Toom, Hornbach and Bauhaus: branches must limit the number of customers

The shop operator must first take suitable measures to ensure that a minimum distance of 1.5 meters between customers can be maintained.

If the threshold of 50 is exceeded, further measures must be taken depending on the size of the branch.

  • Each customer must have ten square meters of space available on a sales area of up to 800 square meters.

  • In larger shops, the following applies: For the part of the sales area exceeding 800 square meters, 20 square meters must be available for each customer.

The following examples illustrate the rule.

If a shop is 600 square meters, a maximum of 60 customers are allowed in it at the same time.

If the store has an area of 1000 square meters, a maximum of 90 customers may be admitted (80 for the first 800 square meters, 10 for the 200 square meters beyond).

The rule applies to all wholesalers and retailers as well as service and craft businesses with customers.

Corona rules at Obi, Toom, Hornbach and Bauhaus: Queues could form in front of branches

The average size of a hardware store in Germany is currently around 7500 square meters.

This means that around 415 customers are allowed to enter.

This could lead to queues in front of the branches of Obi, Toom or Bauhaus with increasing incidence and large crowds, especially on weekends.

Corona rules at Obi, Toom, Hornbach and Bauhaus: Different rules

However, there are different rules depending on the state.

In Lower Saxony, as in Bavaria, access restrictions apply from an incidence value of 35. From an incidence of over 50, the rules for retailers are tightened further.

A negative corona test must be presented again in retail.

Exceptions are shops with a sales area of less than 200 square meters and those that are part of the basic supply such as supermarkets and discounters.
