About a decade ago, Captain Nir Lakrif was killed in an Air Force helicopter crash during an operation in Romania.

After the disaster, Nir's commemoration became the life mission of his father Yuval Lakrif.

The bereaved father chose to commemorate his son at an annual event celebrating Nir's love of aviation - which led to his tragic death.

Nir served in a combat role in the Air Force as an airborne mechanic, serving as the pilot's right hand man and in charge of rescuing the wounded.

In 2010 the helicopter on which Nir was was caught in heavy clouds, hit a mountain and crashed.

In the same disaster, six other soldiers who were in the helicopter and the Romanian observer were killed.

Nir was killed while his wife Maggie was pregnant with their first daughter.

"I saw that the angel of death had come to us."

Father Yuval recounts that damn day, which began when a friend told him about a rumor about a plane crash in Romania.

"I called Nir to make sure he was okay. At first I heard there was a ring and I calmed down. Only later did I find out that the phone rang, but Nir was no longer alive."

He says that the next day he decided to go to the house of Nir, who lived at the Tel Nof base.

"I arrived at the base and saw that the angel of death had come to us. Outside his house stood the base commander and the base commander. They did not know how to approach the house, how to preach the terrible news. Nir's wife, who was pregnant at the time, sat inside the house and saw them from the window. One of us does not want to hear. "

Yuval also shares that at first he did not believe he had heard: "They told us that the connection with Nir's helicopter was lost and they are now searching. I pushed, I wanted to believe that the connection was just cut off and the helicopter managed to land. "Another day, and we're waiting. The week after I was asked to give a blood sample, I realized they had found the bodies."

"Nir liked to fly airplanes, and that's how we chose to commemorate him" (Photo: courtesy of the family,.)

The decision to hold an event in Nir's memory came from his widow Maggie, after she gave birth to their joint daughter Yarin, who did not get to meet her father.

"Maggie reminded me how much Nir liked to fly airplanes," says the father, who stays in close contact with her.

He also tells of the continuation of her life without Nir: "She remarried Assaf, a lovely man, he is also the father of Nir's daughter. Yarin knows that she has a father Nir in heaven and a father Assaf who raises her."

At the parachute event about twenty of New Yetisu's friends flew in his memory.

"I feel great pride," Yuval describes excitedly, "I manage to take grief to places of love and joy rather than depression. I always think to myself, 'What imprint am I leaving in the world? Am I dealing with everything in a positive way or collapsing from everything?' "I feel that through this event I show my grandchildren how to deal with difficult situations."

The event is made possible thanks to a mass funding format.

"People I know and donate are always exciting. But when people I do not know and donate are doubly exciting," Yuval explains and continues, "The money is meant to cover all the expenses of the event. The audience consists of friends, family, Air Force personnel and aviation enthusiasts. My dream this year It is also to find a singer who will agree to come and sing at an event in Nir's memory. "

The event will take place at Bar Lev Industrial Park, during the week of Sukkot.
